I have a JP Surf and thought it might be fun to give it a crack.. for lightwind days on the lake or estuary or play around with some small rollers at the entry.
Would be interested on experiences... also what size sail (i havent windsurfed for 35 years).. guessing a 7m for 15knot days (any windier and I'm kiting)??
Cheers
Tim
Yes I spent a whole summer trying a 7m sail on my Fanatics (Prowave and Allwave, both 9'6).
Didn't go well.
The boards never really got up on the plane and I got tennis elbow really badly.
Tried windsurfing on a mates retro-ass 90's set up and it was 100x better.
Hope the JP gets up and goes better than the Fanatics did! Good luck!
SUP rockers do not plane easily.
Flat water sailing will be frustrating on them, especially with a big sail.
However, playing with small rollers could be fun. Do not expect to plane going out, thus no need for a big sail.
This said, I found it quite frustrating in less than 15knots: trying to get back to the peak upwind can be a chore, as placing oneself for the set, whereas with a paddle you just go straight anywhere you want.
Yeah if I was already good at windsurfing I guess I would have tried surfing waves on it, I found windsurfing very bloody difficult on calm water so the thought to try a smaller sail never occurred to me.
I was pretty keen to get an actual windsurf board but after I recovered my elbow I lost the drive, so just kept buying more kiting gear instead.
Thanks for your feedback.
Maybe i should just get an old windsurfer and rig.
Much appreciated
Yes much better idea, I've seen a couple of JPs pop out there mast track, pretty flimsy really.
I wind-SUP a lot.
But as already said, SUP boards are typically not good for planing.
They are ideal for playing in the waves when the wind is strong enough to be annoying for SUP surfing, but to weak for a true wave windsurf board.
Can also be used in flat water as an alternative to just paddling (not planing).
