When would you choose a 12'6 over a 14 footer?

Guys,
Am still looking to make a start by getting a 14 footer, so definitely new to dw'ing etc, so forgive me if the answer is obvious.....

Aside from dedicated race categories, when would you choose a 12'6 over a 14 footer?
The only time I can imagine is in heavy surf type conditions?

83 kgs.

I'm 83 kilos & had 4 sessions on my new 2014 Fanatic Falcon Carbon 14???0??? ?? 24.75???
Love the board, been on the ocean once with windy & choppy conditions& the river 3 times to date.
6 months SUP experience in general & my previous board was a Coreban Dart 14' x 29"
Currently finding the less width challenging, however I'm up for it & staying on it :-)
Also booked in for 2 of your Perth sessions Pete, can't wait

Interesting TeaTree, that is probably what I expected to be the case - for an average Joe anyway, no doubt the more advanced the paddler the greater the margin between the 12'6 and 14.

Sounds good Chris, nice choice of board by the sound of things. Due to budget constraints I am probably looking for the 2013 model, probably 27.5" for a starting point, and hopefully progress from there.

Nah Pete, forecast tomorrow is for a steamy 15 degrees but there should be a nice 25 knots or so sea breeze coming up from Western Tassie in the afternoon to make sure we don't overcook.

Here,s my take for what its worth. at 83 kg-14'. At 70kg- loving 12'6s for every thing. Those small fanatic inegra paddles are the sh1t

Im not a brand whore mate , but i am stoked with this paddle after one session with it , havent tried the new qb slim jim but that looks good to me also.I found with the QB 100 awesome for power but too much for prolonged sessions , i also think the shaft needs some good flex.Have never tried a Ke Nalu but Im stoked with the new fanatic paddle.if it works it works , and it works for me , very comfortable. When you you look at C1 canoe racing or K1 or surf ski blades they dont have a lot of surface area but are long and narrow. I think this is the go for racing , the tear drop shape for surfing.

i've been red thumbed above, but i'm just giving my take on it being 80 something k's and struggling on 12'6 s to 70 k's and really liking them. i've been on both sides so to speak

imo to be competitive, for 'most' people, at 80 plus k's a 14' er is the go

The 7.5 i think.If you where racing over a short distance a bigger blade is the go , but for bop and distance stuff a smaller surface area is the go

In what way do you mean a waist Mac? To big to small ?
The Kenalu is 95inchs so 5 more than the small fanatic . I'm coming from a 100inch which I felt too big.. The difference in these two blade shapes really are very different also.
Trying the Kenalu tomorrow.. Will try an inegra if possible to compare

Are you guys using the adjustable or fixed version of the inegra?

ha, yeah mate, nothing like stamping it as your own. I wouldn't mind trying a decent adjustable at some stage, there are days in the surf when I wonder if I would be better off a couple of inches shorter. And my paddle too.

I actually checked the new starboard paddles out yesterday.. These are so well priced and look bullet proof. Wouldn't be a bad option
