The Mandurah Offshore Paddling Club (MOCA) is running a Outrigger regatta on the 18th of March 2012 These guys organised the Dual race, the week prior to the Doctor - so it will be well managed.

There will be SUP Course race series as an event during the regatta.
The plan is that this will be a Bop Style race round and will go like this:

Three races of three laps of a set course

Each lap will be around a figure M course with a beach section between each lap.

Each competitor will have to carry their board down the beach from the end of the M course back to the start. Should even out the 14foot advantage!!

Each lap will be about 800m with a 80m beach section between the end and start of the M course.

The start line for the first race will be a random draw for places and obviously the closest end to the start of the M course has the best position.

As an evener the start line for the second and third races will be in reverse order of finishing - that is if you come first in the first race, you will start furthest away from the course in the second race - kind of a natural handicap.

Points will be awarded for places based on the finish position - 1 point for first, 2 points for second and so on. The aim is to finish the three race series with the lowest point score.

We will be on the hunt for prizes so if your a SUP Shop expect a call.
The categories look like being Surf >12'6" (M & F), 12'6" (M & F) and Open <12'6" (M & F).

Exact timings, entry fees and all other details will be posted on this and the MOCA web site shortly. If you can make, it let me know as it would be good to have a gauge of the interest.

There will be a Blues Music Festival on the foreshore, Ski and OC racing, so plenty going on for one and all.

Sounds good I'll be in it. There was some mention of a kids race which would be really good and I've got at least one for that.

Hi One and all,

The Rockingham Big Blue Bash is almost here - weather is looking good and here is some info on the event.

The day will be busy with OC 6's and ski's competing in marathon and sprint events and a SUP BOP style race series.

The full days information can be found at the following site ( http://www.mandurahoceanclub.com.au/p/big-blue-bash.html ) to give you the rundown on the abridged SUP program I'll cut to the chase.
If the web site timings do not concur with the below - ignore them these are the real timings for SUP.

The day for SUP's will run as follows:

0900-1000:Registration. The cost for the day is $20.00 for the SUP's. This includes $10.00 for the insurance and the other $10 to get it all running.
You should register on line at the above website as this will save you the late fee ($35), save time in filling out all the forms on the day, and help us to get a handle on how many we are looking at for the races. Having pre-registered on the net, you still have to turn up and log in at the appointed time
Registration will take place at the Cruising yacht Club on the foreshore in Rockingham (the above site will direct you there).

1030:Race Briefing. the races are going to be fluid in the planning up until this point.
Once we have numbers and a good handle on how the weather is going to go we will set the course (early the morning of the 18th so you can all have a paddle on it before kicks off).
The event will be a number of beach out back races, and the course shape, course length, run length, number of competitors on each heat, number of heats and course direction will all be finalised on the day.
The aim is to have each heat last between 20minutes for the front runners and 30-35 for the back end. We will set the course accordingly as best as we can.
The Race Briefing will take place at the Cruising yacht Club on the foreshore in Rockingham - where you register.
The Race classes will be:
Surf class: <12'6 Male and Female
Race Class:=>12'6 Male and Female

Some notes: you will not need a caddie or attendant to move your board during the race. We will set it out that you will leave your board at the start line as you head off for the run (not too far) so it will be waiting when you get back.
The start will be dry, but at the waters edge.
It is a sup race - not aqua rugby, you are not racing for sheep stations, so take care. The insurance does not cover your paddle or board.
You will have a number on your left arm and this will be recorded as you finish.
You will get points in accordance with your race finishing position 1 for first 2, .. you know the drill.
The lowest score after the three races (if there is that many - maybe more, will have to wait and see) wins in each category.
In the event that we get good numbers we will spilt the field and hold a number of heats with a final.
As the race is in the sheltered waters of Rockingham beach it will be flat (and flat out) and fast.
there is NO requirement for PFD, Flare or leg rope.

1100: 1500(3pm)Heat One starts. The course race will be a very short walk from the briefing point and to the left (south) of the jetty in front of the yacht club as you look to the ocean.
There is plenty of opportunity for your families and friends to watch, cheer on and help you recover after each heat.

1330 (1:30pm)Invitational OC 6 Sprint event. The Outriggers have laid out the challenge to the SUP's and Ski's to take them on!! It will be a short sprint and a chance to try something new.
when you register we will have a list to see who wants a seat in a boat (5 paddlers per boat) and the OC clubs will provide a steerer. In the spirit of the waterman it is always great to try something new.

1500:Juniors Race. this will be a down wind race of about 100m and is open to under 14's. Everyone will be a winner.

1530:Presentations. These will take place at the Cruising Yacht Club, where food and beverages of all flavours (and strengths) will be available at your own cost.

Prizes:so far the cupboard is lean.
Coreban WA have put up a random prize of a Carbon/Kevlar Paddle (value $460.00), to be drawn on all senior entries (sorry juniors), who attend and compete.

Rockingham Blues Festival
The parkland adjacent to the beach is hosting the Rockingham Blues festival and there will be plenty going on in the form of backdrop attractions for one and all. And some good backing music for the races. The music event is expected to be well publicised and this is an opportunity to let the public see a different aspect of the SUP phenomenon in action. I expect there will be some press coverage.

If you have any enquiries please feel free to call or email me directly.
Please put this out there to everyone you can.
This event is not shop, brand or area specific. It is an opportunity for open and inclusive participation for one and all and for the benefit of the sport.

Looking forward to seeing you all there.

I have had some enquiries/concerns at the though of a beach carry with boards. Just to be clear - there will be no carrying boards on the beach leg. The course will be set so that it will be a heart shape (modified M) so that the start position will be where you leave your board, before a short/moderate (depending on the conditions) trot down the beach and back to your board for the next lap.

Sorry for any confusion regards the race program.
it is as follows:

registration: 9-10
Race brief: 10:30
First Race: 11:00
As we don't know how many paddlers we will get the timings after this are dynamic.
If the numbers are under 20 it will be a three race series with 15-20 minutes between races.
If the numbers are 25+ we will break into two groups and run a 5 race series with a final of the two top paddlers on time.
The time allocated to run the SUP event is between 11:00 to 15:00.
The Junior race will start at 15:00
Presentations will be at 15:30.

hope that clears it up.

lots happening on the beach and foreshore to keep you occupied between heats and presentations and we are getting some good support from retailers for prizes.

We'll bring down some race boards if anyone would like to borrow a board for the race or just have a paddle on some boards before or after races.

We will also bring down some prizes to go in the prize pool.

Great effort Ads and others for getting the event up and happening.

We'll set up on the beach near the start finish line by 10, so see you then.

Another great day put on by the Mandurah club. As a competitor I hope Greg Long stays in oc and as a spectator let's hope we see more of him on a sup. I'm not sure what happened in the first race, but for race 2&3 Greg and Peter battled it out on 14 DC and coast runner respectively. Marcus led the charge in the 12'6 fleet followed closely by Reece both on DC's.

Thanks to Darren from Stand Up Paddle Perth, tough competitor, Ian from Auswind for bringing down a bunch of boards for everyone to try, Jason from west oz, Colin from the Mandurah club and Adam for his organising. Hopefully next time I will be able to make all three races and from what Colin was saying, this is just the begining.

Hey guys,

It was a great day! Good conditions, fun course, well organized and great to see the groms paddling

Also nice to see so many ladies paddling in the race too. I think that's the first BOP I've seen with a womens division, good stuff.

Well done Ads, his little helpers (some big actually ) and the Mandurah Paddling CLub.

Sorry I couldn't hang around until Preso, I had a family who forgot they had a daddy and it was necessary to get home pronto!

Congrats to all deserved winners, well raced!

A blast in every sense.

Thanks to everyone who supported the event with their attendance and efforts and a huge thanks to the awesome sponsors:
Darren (Standup Paddle Perth), Ian (Stand Up Paddle Sports), Jason (WestOz Boardsports), and Veronica (Coreban WA).

It was great to see the Machines of Long, Pridemore and Muir smash it out, but the most inspirational was the efforts by the 8 ladies, some of who have only been paddling for a few months, showing that 'have a go attitude' that is in all of us.

Great participation from the grom's and the Club hopes this will become an annual event.

The results:
Male Race Class (=>12'6")
1st - Gregg Long
2nd - Peter Pridemore
3rd - Reeve Muir

Female Race Class
1st - Michelle England
2nd - Cindy Fisher
3rd - Lorraine Gruillis

Male Surf Class
1st - Peter Cuff
2nd - Kirra Fisher

Female Surf Class
1st - Nikki Jones
2nd - Mel Small
3rd - Lisa Dawkins

Junior Sprint Male
1st - Kirra Fisher
2nd - Samuel McPhail
3rd - Sam McCullough

Junior Sprint Female
1st - Jazmin Dawkins
2nd - Brooke Lewis

All the Adult place getters have medals and prizes waiting and I will track you down to get them to you. If you can send me a message that would help.

Will post some phot's soon.

thanks again,

Thanks to the Mandurah Offshore Paddling Club and Adam for organising a great day. Races were well run and there was plenty of prizes for everyone, thanks to the sponsors. The kids race was a great hit with my son and he is already asking when the next one is.
Hey Cam can you change your boards colour scheme to match mine so i don't have to worry about scraping off odd colour paint after every race.

Bloody ripper day thanks to the MOC guys and gals for putting it together, have one very happy grom and one not as happy missing the start due to it being brought forward!! It would be great to see the kids having another go again?
Had a blast in the OC6 (i think) with our makeshift SUP crew, we didn't fair too badly.
Big thankyou to all the sponsors especially Coreban thanks for the paddle, Luke should have won it, he has one very short paddle now!!
