December 2nd 2012 will see the staging of the 3rd annual Great Melbourne Paddle. Now established as a major event of the summer series, catering to all paddlers in the Bayside area and beyond, the Great Melbourne Paddle attracts a large contingency of paddlers from around Victoria, and also sees paddlers from interstate and abroad travelling to compete.
The location for this years event will be Sandridge Beach, Port Melbourne, a departure from the traditional home of the race in Brighton. This historic and scenic location offers great views for paddlers of the Spirit of Tasmania, Princes Pier, Beacon Cove, the Westgate Bridge and of course the Melbourne city skyline as a backdrop.
The main event will be 12kms (4 laps of a 3km race circuit) from Sandridge Beach, around Princes Pier to Beacon Cove and back. A half course option is also available for less experienced paddlers.
Sprint race, social paddle and kids events will also take place, with a festa event expo also taking place on the foreshore.
The Great Melbourne Paddle is Round#2 of the 2012-13 Victorian Flat Water SUP Championship Series presented by SUP VIC & Surfing Victoria.

With just 10 days to go before the big race, we've had one or two truly world class racers committed to coming down - very exciting.
Keep getting those pre-registrations in. You have to pre-register before the day to get into the computer timing system as we can't enter people on the day of the race.http://www.supvic.com/2012-great-melbourne-paddle-registration-form/
As part of the GMP, we are holding a beachside EXPO, with Starboard, Naish, DC (Dale's coming down) Global Surf Ind, Surftech, Walk On Water, Fanatic all on board with tents and gear to show and demo.
Also the sprint race should be great, good to follow on from the black blade, to get us all revved up for this newer format.
The course will be pretty cool too. 3km circuit x 4 laps (or less if you want to!)
Register Now!!
Dogman is confirmed for the GMP and he has some great Surftech demo boards with him.. ![]()

Looking forward to the GMP this Sunday, apart from the spectacle of such a strong racing scene in Vicco and the chance to have a demo or two of some pretty nifty looking boards from all the brands available in Australia is the social aspect of the Sport of Stand Up paddling, its a great day to be had...
haha, from one traditional home to another..of sorts.
I have heard Sup referred to as the "gay gondilier" but that was coming from a kiteboarder....are you coming down .... do you know need directions?![]()
I think Adolf is referring to Port Melbourne beach, a well known hangout for those inclined. That's 'the other side' of the Spirit if Tasmania berth... Not that there's anything wrong with that.![]()
Weather forecast - 22 with isolated showers. 10kn SW wind. Not too bad. Better than the 38 we are getting today!
Agreed.
A bit of wind and some good old Pt Phillip bay chop always makes for an interesting, action-packed race ![]()
