Have a chance to travel to Siargao Island in The Philippines in January.
Have heard about it as a surf spot -Cloud 9 - but has anybody SUPed there ?
Any idea on airlines to Manila then to Siargao with a SUP? Or can you hire there ?
Many thanks.
PS: I suspect Cloud 9 may be a little heavy but there appear to be a couple of other breaks in the area (getting soft in old age).
PPS: Seem to remember there was a gent surfing Fanatics there at some stage but cannot find the posts
Kyron Rathbone is your man he lives there and used to be a regular here on Seabreeze catch up with him on Facebook.
I've chatted to him previously Cloud 9 isn't a Sup friendly place he gets by because he is married to a local girl who is a champion surfer ,it gets pretty crowded as well.
A woman surfer here from Philippines.......i said "i want to go".....she said "its only knee high". Think the better surf out in areas that might be dangerous ?
Cloud9 is actually plenty good and with swell easily overhead. I was lucky enough to surf it in the '80s before the air conditioned surf lodges and crowds. For a couple of dollars a day a dry place to sleep on the ground and 3x rice and fish.
Second time there a Japanese surf hostel had sprang up and the tight peak and very shallow reef was way more challenging due to the crowd. I imagine by now it's not worth the trip unless your a charging prone shortboarder.
Pretty good spot. I catch a boat from Dapa down the bottom end to work on one of the mines over there. Lots of brazilnuts at the airport usually when I land, either coming or going. Haven't seen a Sup but lots of short boards. The other option for flights is Singapore> Cebu with Silk Air then Cebu pacific or Philly air to Siargao. There are also ferry's that run from Cebu to Siargao which could be another option if ya are keen to take the Sup.
