The Stand Up Surf Shop King of the Cut presented by Redink Homes was a great race. Nearly 80 competitors from around the world entered the event, over 45% coming from interstate and overseas. The quality of the field was very high with 30 competitors in the Pro Class division – that’s a loaded race!
The calibre of racing didn’t disappoint, with Beau, Travis and Matt battling it out early and Ange just getting Karla in the last section leading into the finish. Beau was ultimately too strong and backed up his win in the Doctor the week before, to take away his second King of the Cut title. As always it isn’t just about the elite guys – the Under 40, Over 40 and Over 50 male divisions had their battles. None more comprehensive than Kevin defending his O/50 title from the past 2 years, 31 minutes in front of his 2nd placed rival (and 20minutes behind the overall leaders).
Male O/50
Kevin Kemp-Smith 2:13.38
Kent Wright
Gordon McKercher
Rick Maxwell
Female over 40 was a 2 paddler affair. Despite the match race, it was a question of heart. Cristiana defended her state title from last year, but Nicki Jones competed her first KotC. Two fantastic, strong West Australian women pioneering SUP racing in WA – just getting down and mixing it with the best in the world!
Female O/40
Cristiana Chessa 2:43.09

Dale Chapman also proved he could mix with the younger blokes, finishing in the top 20 overall and taking out the O/40 title.

The Under 40 division was taken out by local boy and new paddler Leo Beyers in his first KotC.

The Unlimited division was a comprehensive win by Ben. This was the first time we had a full division of unlimited board (>14’) in the KotC and it may be only a matter of time when we see an unlimited take out the King trophy.

Greg (& Rog)
Nice work yet again Matty. Great race, great recap and looking forward to next year.
Put it it in you diary people December 5th 2015.
The Video is SUP!
That was some great footage you feel like your right there loved it great job.
Even the trophies are the best in the country. Great poster, great t-shirt, great video, great event by the looks. I dare say it will attract twice the number next year. I know a few Victorians already planning their training around getting fit for this event. Pre-season starts now.
Welldone reflex for taking the time on putting that vid together....
And welldone to angie and vanilla ice for taking out the double...
Thanks Greg.
Looks like a rad event, can't wait to design for next year and come on over. I REALLY should start training now!
Congrats to everyone who paddled their best, and to the organisers. Great edit Matt!

Cheers
Rog
Well done Beau on winning the KOTC. Did you eat Gun Powder for breakfast on fire great to see. Conditions looked mellow on the video what would you rate those conditions that day a 5/10 ?
Hope to see ya on Maui next July for a Maliko run it will blow ya mind, you can do the 15km Maliko run in like 60 minutes the elite guys do it in 53/55 minutes
I guess if you wana break into the top ten on SUPracer you'll have to come to Hawaii for Downwind Month.
Beau have you done the Brunswick Heads to Hastings Point run it's a straight 20km run you can do the run in like 90 minutes the hardest parts getting out through the heads you'll need Jet-Ski assistance.
Great to see the Unlimited guys have a go at the KOTC but only 4 of you's was a bit sad my f18 would have loved those conditions. Conditions would have been slow for my custom f16. Hope to see you 4 blokes in Maui next July then you'll feel the full potential of the Unlimited board and there will be 100 Unlimited boards at the starting Line.
Well done Goochi on running the only stand alone SUP race in Australia, hope Beau shouted everyone a few beers.
Nice vid! I must just mention my little bro came in 6th. Not me. He must've been so fast up the beach he was missed!
Hi downwinder, that run is different to maliko but I do find it as enjoyable and when you get over 20knots (which we probably didn't on sat). The first ten Kms is as good as maliko in over 20knots in my opinion. You should come and bring a big board next year.
Looked like an awesome race. I wish I could have stayed the extra week to race after doing the Doctor. Great Vid...it shows just how the guys and gals at the top of the game walk up and down the board with ease and link up the runners. RESPECT
Awesome performances from Beau and Ange for taking the WA double header
It was probably one of the mellowest cut runs I have done out of all the actual KotC events and another 3 or 4 runs, if it had been held the last couple of days it would have been heaps windier and a little bit cleaner.
So unfortunately it wasn't at it's best but it was still super fun and that's what makes the run so good, even when not at it's best the wind is still pretty much behind you the whole way.

It's all relative, I rate it 8/10 compared to last years conditions at gold coast for the
nationals!
That was one of the funnest downwinders I've ever done, and to get those conditions for a race was unreal.
15/10
Still stoked ![]()
