Just received this info on the QLD State Titles from Surfing Queensland...
2012 will see Surfing Queensland expand the range of paddleboard and stand up paddleboard opportunities available to the state's best exponents of the rapidly expanding discipline.
The 2012 Surfing Queensland SUP & Ocean Paddle Festival will be activated over the Queen's Birthday Long Weekend (June 9-11, 2012). The three-day festival will provide the exclusive qualification pathway for Queensland athletes aiming to compete at the 2012 Australian SUP titles in the disciplines of:
- SUP Surfing
- SUP Technical Sprint Racing
- SUP Long Course Racing (Xcel Open Ocean Paddleboard Race)
The Pathway
1. 2012 Surfing Queensland SUP & Ocean Paddle Festival
2. 2012 Australian SUP Titles (August, 2012)
3. 2013 International Surfing Association Paddleboard & SUP World Championships.
Qualification for Aussie Titles is based on the results from this event and allocation is:
SUP Surfing: 4 x Open Men, 2 x Open Women, 2 x Over 40 Open
SUP Technical Sprint Racing (12'6 class): 8 x Open Men, 4 x Open Women, 4 x Over 40 Open
SUP Marathon (14' class): 8 x Open Men, 4 x Open Women, 4 x Over 40 Open
There will be other classes available for the marathon (Snapper to Currumbin) but the 14' class will be the qualifying class and will include a longer course within Currumbin Creek (rather than the usual finish of the XCEL race).
A special offer of $165 is available to competitors who enter all three disciplines (SUP Surfing, Sprint Racing & Long Course Racing). Simply enter all three components of the festival in your respective division and contact Surfing Queensland via email info@surfingqueensland.com.au to receive your $30 discount.

Does each state get the same allocation of entrants into the Australian Titles? Eg 4 x open men surfing from QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, WA, NT, TAS and ACT meaning a possible total of 32 participants.
Hi Guys, got this response back from Surfing Queensland with respect to interstate competitors and requirements for Surfing Queensland Membership:
"We welcome as many interstate competitors as possible. The conditions we've outlined on the website are as follows:
Please Note: If an interstate competitor is a current financial member of an affiliated state branch i.e Surfing NSW, VIC, SA, WA, TAS they do not need to become a Surfing Queensland member to compete in a state qualification division.
These competitors are welcome to compete in the Surfing Queensland SUP & Ocean Paddle Festival (both State Qualification and non-State Qualification divisions), however they will not be eligible to represent Queensland at the subsequent Australian Titles.
Queensland competitors aiming to represent the state at the 2012 Australian SUP Titles, must be a current financial member of Surfing Queensland prior to competing in any State Qualification SUP division.
Our constitution outlines that ANY state qualification event requires full financial membership prior to competition, so we've included both paddle and surfing divisions under this.
Also – club membership i.e. SUPSA does not cover you for state qualification events either - you are still required to become a state member to compete."
So in short:
- Interstate competitors are welcome to compete (but obviously not qualify for QLD team)
- Surfing QLD membership will be required for QLD competitors in all state qualification events (racing and surfing)
- Interstate competitors need to be a member of any state branch of Surfing Australia
Hope this answers a few questions and hopefully we'll see some of the NSW crew come up for the event.
Surf4Fun - I'm still trying to find out the answer re. allocation for other states (I think is depends on membership numbers within state branches and a few other factors so not every state automatically gets the same allocation.)
Hey Guys, this is the breakdown for each state quals for Aussies. Looking forward to this event, I will definately be there!
