Hi , never been to Sumatra or PNG but the sup surf looks epic there .
looking to go Jan - March 2021 and would ideally like a fairly quiet spot , basic accommodation , as I'm there for a few months I reckon 15 dollars a night if possible for somewhere to sleep ( I've no idea of this is doable price wise ) I'm comfortable in 4-6 waves and up for an adventure . Any recommendations? Many thanks Frazer
Go to Nusa Island in PNG perfect spot and great for Sup . I shot my first movie there Living The Stoke. It's only a very short boat ride from Kavieng ( 5 mins ) you can stay on Kavieng very cheap but there is a strict limit on the amount of surfers and where you can surf. You just can't lob there and surf where you want you have to stay with one of the surf camps. They do this to make sure vital services are maintained in each village and individuals aren't just keeping the cash , sounds a bit strict but it's not , its really well run. Not sure how'll you go on 15 bucks a night but I said above it's not a place you just roll up and go surfing where you want , without first pre organizing it and paying a fee.

stayed and surfed here in 2012 shortboard and Sup. if you're looking for pub club life bypass this or stopover Bali or KL.
surf camps only, its a journey and adventure its a step back in time really.
you need to transfer from jakarta to south sumatra. the connecting flights are very cheap.
we went bris to KL stoped 3 days then flight to jakarta then flight to Lampung three weeks Ombak.
on way home, flight to jakarta then bali stop 4 days then flight home.
