I'm looking at getting a Star Board All Star Down Wind board. 14' x 25". I have an option of full carbon or glass carbon. Unfortunately, I don't have the option of testing this board. This will be my 1st Down Wind board. I've been on the new Naish Maliko 14' x 26" and Fanatic Falcon 14' x 27" and had no issues with balance on these boards. I've also done a 20km Race on an older Naish 14' x 27". I'm in Mackay and we get alot of choppy water up here. Will the 25" width be too narrow? I'm 77kgs. Also, whats the weight difference between the full carbon and glass carbon. Is there any other boards I should consider? Any feed back would be appreciated.
Hey mate
Allstar DW is pretty average if you ask me, yes it can be done and by some of the top riders it can be super fast but for 99% of people its just alot of hard work and there are far better boards to do this job.
At 77kg i think you would be ok if your balance is good.
To be honest i think if you are looking for a DW board look for something with a fuller nose as this just makes the boards much more user friendly.
I'm more than happy to recommend a bunch of good alround boards if you like and if you are going to 80% just DW then i can recommend boards that will do this even better.
Jacko
Listen to Jacko. For a fast downwind board you can't go past the Ace or something like the One Storm. Both of them would leave the Allstar for dead. I have also heard some good comments down our way about the Jimmy Lewis Sidewinder. I have an Ace and if I was after a new downwind board I would get another one or look at the Storm.
Thanks guys, was mainly looking at the All Star based on price. As there's a few around brand new. Any recommendations on boards would be great. Cheers
I see the Sale price on the 2015 Allstars $1699 for Glass(heavy YUK) and $2499 for the Carbon better as weight is nicer but IMO still the wrong board.
Since you are in Mackay and have wind chop and not much swell i feel the allstar would be a bad choice and for the money above if thats what you are going to spend i could think of a few better choices.
Now don't shoot me down i am only going to suggest boards that i have ridden myself and i know are for sale weather through my shop or online somewhere.
1:NSP 2015 14 x 26 full carbon $2399 on sale. This is a flat deck board and is pretty good both DW and in the flat.
2: in the Buy and sell on this site is a ONE Bill Foote 14 x 25.5 down wind board this is a unreal board crazy light and built for the bumps and would eat the water you have up your way and a bargin at $2050 I also have one of these in my Store in 24 wide at similar money.
3: Any ACE from 2013 and up
4: ONE Storm great board but unfortunately none available until Early next year at this stage.
5: Older Fanatic 2014 and 2015 model IMO these are better than the later boards as they are more stable and are easier to use, these are pretty cheap 2nd hand.
My pick for your waters and what is available right now i would go the ONE bill Foote then a ACE followed by the NSP. the advantage with the NSP is it is brand new.
Hope this helps Jacko
I had the 2015 AllStar 14x25. Good board but I would not buy one for downwinding even if only 30% or 40% of the time.
Downwind time is rare and sacred so as not to waste it with the wrong tool.
thanks for the feed back. I'm in no rush, so I'll have a good look around. Just had a look at the One Storm. Very nice. $2500 is going to be my limit. I can't justify spending any more than that. Thanks again.

Thats cool, i would really look at the Bill Foote DW board, we only ever made four of these and if you do a bit of research you will find they are one of the best DW boards around. The one that is for sale on this site is a bargain as they RRP$4000 they weigh about 9kg and full carbon full PVC. i'm more than happy to run you more about the board if you like and i have been on this board a bit so know how it works.
It's not me selling it but i know the guy and he always looks after his gear.
Otherwise don't wait to long as watching other people have fun sucks compared to doing it yourself!!
