Western Australia’s iconic Rottnest Island is set to showcase some of the countries very best Stand Up Paddle boarding (SUP) talent, with the inaugural Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic and WA SUP State Titles set to make a splash on Rottnest’s picturesque beaches and pristine waters early next month.
In what is fast shaping to be the largest SUP event to ever be held in WA, the Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic is a new and exciting addition to the Surfing WA events calendar for 2015. The three-day competition will combine both professional and amateur divisions in a true celebration of surfing’s newest code.
"We are really driven to develop a marquee event for each of the boardriding codes here in the west," said Surfing WA Events Manager Justin Majeks. "Rottnest is such an amazing event location, rich in surfing history and we’re excited to be bringing SUP to the island for the first time."
Boasting a rich prize purse of $7,000 as well as valuable qualification points towards the 2015 Australian SUP Titles to be held in Currumbin QLD in November, the event is expected to attract 100 plus competitors to the holiday island.
Amongst the field of confirmed competitors is 2014 world # 18 Justin Holland, Kai Bates and current Australian Champion Rick Jakovich (Gracetown, WA) and his brother Jake who is the reigning WA Open Men’s State Champion.
“SUP riders in WA have been looking forward to a high performance contest for quite some time and Rottnest provides the perfect playground,” said Stand Up Surf Shop owner Mike Galvin. “We are happy to be supporting events that help develop all levels of the sport and display what the WA coast has to offer and why it is ideal for all forms of SUP.”
Anticipation is building within the SUP community, with rumours of interest from many international competitors from as far a field as Hawaii, the United States and Tahiti.
The professional SUP divisions are set to get underway on Friday the 8th of May with the WA SUP State Titles to commence on Saturday the 9th May.
Entry positions for both the Stand Up Surf Shop Rottnest Classic and WA SUP State Titles are still open via www.surfingwa.com.au. Competitors can also find out further information about the awesome winter packages on offer thanks to the Rottnest Island Authority and Rottnest Express by clicking here.
Nice work putting this together Cam, Galvo and the SUSS crew.
I am really looking forward to this, I hope it turns it on with some solid A frames like I know it can.
Whilst I have entered I am frothing more about watching some of the best in action in potentially epic conditions. ![]()
where is the surfing taking place? or is it a number of spots depending on swell/wind direction?
will it be visable from the beach? i am keen to come watch but wont come if it is out at an outer reef unvisable.
of course if anyone needs a deck crew man im happy to crack beers for them.
The main location for the surfing is Strickos but there are alternatives if it is uncontestable out there.
Surfing will be at Stricko's, there will be tents set up but bring relevant clothing and food available at the comp site, very visible from the beach, it will be a great weekend to watch and some awesome surfers have confirmed including Justin Holland, Kai Bates, Rick and Jake Jakovich, Dave Muir, Scott McKercher, Shakira Westdorp. Will be a super fun weekend. (apologies for any Spelling mistakes with names).

Yeah there is commentry and music, not a live band or anything, surfing can start as early as 7:30 but probly around 8, the pro division is open to any one from around the world, the State Round is only open to WA residents. Cross your fingers for sick conditions.
Awesome work guys this looks the goods, pity ill be away for work again!
Is this going to replace the Yalls round of the SUP titles?
Rob
Any live scores going to be available online for those of us that can't make it?
We will try and work on some updates, some of us aren't that good at computers, look at SUPWA Facebook, Surfing WA website and Instagram SURFING_WA
I will be trying to get some quick daily updates out to keep everyone updated on
what has been going down.
(4g Internet access dependent)

Come on Matt we want live streaming with inane commentary and massive amounts of ads like the bells event.
Throwing it out there but if anyone is cruising out to check out the comp on the Saturday on a boat I'd be happy to throw some cash and beers your way for the boat trip out there and back
Keen to go check it out.
Cheers Timmy.

Or Chickens, Cathedrals.
Swell is not looking to flash but at least wind looks like it will be light.
the condition are setting up quite nicely for Cathedrals and we would have the seals as ours spectators !
(that's all some of us probarly deserve)
But at least Stickos won't have to many other boats rocking up.
and should be contestable with some great weather on the island.
Hi All we are going to haver a few drink and briefing on Thursday night for Pro competitors and anyone who would like to come at the Govenors Bar at the Lodge, we will then have a Opening Ceremony / Competitors briefing for all State Round competitors and anyone who wants to attend once again at the Govenors on Friday night. Hey Rog, great news on the transport for boards. Will there be any transport for competitors and spectators (e.g. shuttle bus) or will we have to use the regular RIA bus service or bike it. Just wondering because I'm arriving on Friday would like to go out and watch pro and will have kids who may won't to go to and fro from comp site a bit. Cheers.
Apologies just got the email with all the relevant information from surfing WA. Just to let all the other competitors know that you have to walk to West End with your boards for a 5.00am briefing every morning.

See you tomorrow champ! Looking forward to catching up with everyone for the weekend! It's been while!
Back on the boat after the first surf at the comp zone and it was fun out there, light offshore with a consistent little swell and the crew where ripping it up.
Going to be a entertaining weekend !
