Hi There, the schedule on the site goes like this:

Thursday - Surfing Competition 8am - 4pm
Friday - Surfing Competition 8am - 4pm (Finals) and 4pm presentation on beach
Friday - Technical Sprint Race 1pm Briefing, 2 - 3pm start and 4pm presentation on Beach.

I assume the Tech Sprint race will be held BEFORE the finals?? Is so can you enter at the last minute?

Just a comment/feedback: why not keep the racing and surfing on separate days. Better still on separate weekends. I reckon numbers for the surf will be down due to the mid week dates. This seems to be a trend now with these comps, ie having surfing mid week and racing on the weekend. It makes it very hard when you have to get time off work.

- Less chance of having problems with free surfing, weekend warriors invading the contest zone.
- And I'd rather have to only travel there once.
- And it's better for the local community to have some more mid-week guests.
- And I like not going to work.

Come on waves like last year:

Have to agree with Casso...

For club and local comps keep them on the weekend to suit the masses!

BUT for bigger events such as a state title, it makes sense to keep it all together, especially for you guys in NSW who have people travelling from as far north as Byron/Tweed and down to the South Coast. If you make it 2 separate weekends so the Sydney folk don't have to take time off work, the guys from around the rest of the state would have to take time off to travel twice (probably one day on either side of each weekend).

It's all right for you semi retired types But the majority of us have to take limited leave, sickies or whatever to come, plus you can't take your family.

I reckon the numbers at the SUPA event were low due to the mid week dates when you compare it to their weekend event last November.

The QLD titles work out nicely by having it on a long weekend though

Alright then lets put the racing on mid week and the surfing on the weekend because from what I can gather the racing types seem to be a it more serious in that they travel all over the place - Hawaii, WA, etc.

Fair call, maybe something for the organisers to consider in the future?

If I combined the cost of joining Surfing NSW $60 and the entry for Comp$55 with the cost of Day care for the grom $90 x 2days plus after school care for my Daughter $22 x 2 plus 20hrs leave from work because its Thursday and Friday it adds up to me no being able to attend!!!
As for being on week days not to upset the locals then we are allways going to be playing 2nd fiddle to what others would call mainstream surfing!!!!!
They do not hold the shortboard or Mal titles mid week...
And Surfing titles should be held in locations that are know for having Good to Great waves so the Surfers can show the highest level of there skills (I am not trying to put down One Mile) But since the dream tour became the dream tour by having the events at great locations at the good time of the year the sponsorship dollars have increased hugely..
If anyone else can remember the 80,s with pro surfers grovelling in 1 foot slop because thats where the sponsors wanted to hold the event not the Surfers!!!!!It made surfing look like ****..
They would not be struggling for numbers if they held State and National titles at Snapper or Cresent Heads or Nth Narrabeen it would allow us to show case how fars SUP has progress!!!!! We are surfers and should be treaded us such!!
Thats just my thoughts though!!!!

And again another comp run on a weekday.

Why is it that associations choose to run comps on weekdays??
Apart from the small group of rich retirees and dole bludgers, that don't have work, surely more people would enter if it was run on a weekend.

Farley disappointed, looks like the snowy is it for 2012 as everything else is midweek.

One of the best Sup Comps is on the June Long Weekend at Manly - no sickies required!

www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/SUP/Snowy-2012/?SearchTerms=Snowy

Traditionally a good time of year for waves and the banks have been very good down that end of town lately

So who's coming?

I would thought you'd be going in the QLD titles Geoff.

Me and the family are making a weekend on the Goldy out of it.

Oh oh, a little bit of wind coming our way on Saturday - 16km marathon race day:

But how epic would this 16km run be if they change it to a downwinder?

I like it Casso!
With a strong westerley, the further out in the bay you get, the less protection from the wind and the bumps would just get more fun the whole way!

I agree with Casso and Ali. According to the course plan, current forecasts show 7km of the race would be directly into a 25 knot headwind. Yikes.

that's a good run in the westerly casso, but to get to swan bay ( your starting point) it will take atleast a hour drive from nelson bay cause i'm pretty sure you have to drive through Medowie back on to the highway to karuah and in that way.

Yeah - I calculated it at an hour in the car too (one way).

It's only 15 mins to Soldiers Point though so we could just do the second half of this same route (an 8km run). We could do it twice to make up the 16km!

will see what they say on Thursday about it ill have a chat with them this week and see if that run is possible? i'm on the ski that weekend and i was thinking of the original course it would be a screamer one way. almost impossible the other way and the 2 in between i think your arms would fall off from cross chop paddling.

Well yeah, I guess it does become a bit of a safety concern if people run out of steam in 25 knot headwinds half way along that east to west 7km stretch around Corrie Island and they don't have the juice to even paddle back to the start/finish. That's always a risk for a few entrants in a marathon regardless of the conditions, but to potentially have 90% of the field needing assistance - that might stretch resources a little.

If the tide is running in against the westerly the swell stands right up on that narrow part between soliders pt and the other side!! Sometimes over waist high, there is a lot of tide to think about coming in or out off that bay!!!

17 Degs with 30 knots of wind with exhausted paddles every where EQUALS hypothermia
Should be part of risk assessment
Just thoughts

17 degrees and hypothermia? We copped 4 degrees this morning. If I'm paddling in 17 degrees on Saturday, I'll be more concerned by heat stroke.
