* Note; I have no connection to Sunova other than I have their boards (which I paid for)
63 year old SUPer intermediate took up 5-6 years ago - little surfing experience prior,
Mike and I enjoyed a 5 day escape with some surf fun thrown in. Sorry no video or photos of s surfing (not that professional)
It all started when Mike was looking for a new SUP and the Perth SUP shop wasn't doing an order until next year so Mike emailed the factory and they said why don't you come up? We've got SUPs up here and you can try it out, so that sounded like a good idea !!!!
We went Jetstar 7.40am gets up here at about 1.45pm, then an hour and a half taxi to the resort The Hotel is pretty isolated, but there's a beach break right out the front and we'll go and have a look at the point break, not sure if that's going to be working.
Once we checked into the hotel we caught a Tuktuk up to the Board factory and met Dylan and the girls and, right from the start they were fantastic ..really helpful. Dylan explained the difference between the Ghost and the Ghost Up and then he sort of worked out that Mike would probably need a 9'3 Ghost and a 9'5 Ghost Up
The plan is to have the Ghost for Perth which is a little bit more stable little bit easier to ride and then the Ghost Up is for the more powerful surf at Yallingup.
So we had a beer and he looked up his stock and amazingly he brought out two brand-new SUPs - incredible - and we started unpacking them, finning them up, couple of paddles, couple of leg ropes and then we shove them all into a Tuktuk and we went back to the hotel.
The boards look amazing. They're done in a very deep dark wood so they look spectacular.
Dylan told us a bit about his life how he grew up in Mandurah and then at 10 moved across to the Gold Coast and then about 10 years ago he came to Thailand.
He and his dad Bert set up a factory in a very industrial area where everyone else has factories for SUPs and surfboards and starting producing boards.
Then they decided that they wanted to be close to the beach and make an experience so they found this factory unit. It was a hardware store and they've turned it into the board factory where Ripcurl rent a bit of the area, and they've got a shop there.
Sunova have their surfboards, Foil and SUP display as well out the back is a is the factory. It stopped working for the day when we were there but will go back and have a look at it at a later date.
Dylan is an amazing guy who loves what he does and wants to promote demos in the area more. I'm writing a bit of a story about our time here.
I'm not sure if the surf's going to be that good but let's see.
The next morning was 2-3 foot and it was still worth getting out, no wind and few people.
Caught well over my quota of rides plus they were a bit longer and then our traditional Cottesloe rides, SUP in the afternoon was even better and we got to see how the board went. So that was day 1, pretty easy. I think airfares were about A$670 from Perth accommodations about A$90 a night (with breakfast) and the taxi was about $100 between two of us so about $1200 each for five nights. (Plus food and drinks)
