SPSC DOWNWIND RACING SERIES
Following on from Sam William's post on Seabreeze the other week, it is with great pleasure that we announce the formation of SPSC Racing as a sub-committee of SPSC.
SPSC Racing will (as Sam indicated) be running a series of DW Stand Up races between North Avalon & Fishermans Beach over summer.
SPSC Racing will run in conjunction with the already existing SPSC Surfing club and aim at creating a complete SUP Club which caters for two very distinct types of SUP disciplines, 1) Surfing 2) Long distance/Racing styled paddling.
SPSC Racing will not impact on anything relating to the already well established SPSC Surfing discipline and will run completely separate events during the season.
One main aim for SPSC Racing is to hold fun styled downwind racing events that are offered at an affordable price tag for everyone.
The race management will be headed up by experienced paddlers and event managers Dave Kissane and Sam Williams so you can be assured every attempt will be made to make racing downwind, accessible for more people and above all fun.
Dates as previously posted are as follows so start getting ready ready as it isn't too far off now.
- 26/27th October
- 16/17th November
- 21/22nd December
- 11/12 January
- 15/16th Feb
- 1/2nd March
Entry details and pricing to follow but the intention is too keep it accessible. i.e./ cheapish!
If the Reef2Reef was anything to go by numbers will be up. 50+ competitors in the ocean in Sydney is a big step up from last year!
Event info will be posted here, SPSC facebook page and website (take a look anyway), Sydney SUP Downwind Facebook page, and also Windsurfnsnow Facebook page.
Hope to see you then,
Sam Parker.

Well done in organising this Sam, Sam and Dale. This will be a great series with emphasis on DW conditions. The 6km courses will be a great opportunity for those new to downwinding to give it a go.

Is the 21/22 December the 20 beaches race (or in conjunction with)
Thanks
Pete
Hi Pete,
The 20 Beaches is on the weekend before. Saturday the 14th Dec.
Stay down for both and run a clinic or two!!! Would get solid numbers easy.
Sam.
Im keen to jump in a few.
Are they all going to be north beaches events, or will some be on the south side?
Cheers

Sounds like a plan
Just a question on the cost Paul C advised no cost for first event?
Huh?
Just a question on the cost Paul C advised no cost for first event?
Hi Greg,
I think that reference may have been to no payment required for online registration. All race fees are cash payments on the day and $20 per race is hopefully seen as pretty reasonable to encourage participation across the whole series.
The Online registration process is important so that organisers have contact details for all intending participants so that changes to the course or scheduled day for the event can be communicated ASAP.
Apologies for any confusion or miscommunication on my part.
Cheers

Yes Steve, they will all be Northern Beaches based.
for those who dont live north side and have to travel, when will the final call be made as to which day the events will run?

"RACE UPDATE WITH NEW COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT"
We can now confirm the race will be held on SATURDAY the 26th at 2pm on a new friendlier for all levels course. Both short course and long courses have been merged in to basically a reverse " REEF 2 REEF " at about 9.5km. Should be fun for all levels and definitely better than not having the short at all.
Course Detail: Brownwater start, rounding Newport Reef to finish on the beach at Newport. 9.5 km.
?
Pre Rego Important: www.webscorer.com/register?pid=1&raceid=12602&owner=1
Rego and briefing: 12.30-1.30 pm at Brownwater to the east of the boat ramp at Collaroy Basin.
Safety Briefing: 1.30pm.
Race Start: 2pm.
Equipment: Buoyancy PFD Type 2. Must be worn, not inflatable. Leash and hi vis top. Can be bought on day if needed for $10.
Conditions: Forecast is for 10-15 SSW turning S-SE at about the same strength by race start at 2pm. Should be a great run for all.
Just a reminder for everyone to enter on line before the race as it makes the timing process and rego easier.
Conditions looking good for the race with a little bit of swell which should make it interesting.
If you don't have a PFD they are available from WindSurfNSnow at Long Reef and Ocean Paddler at North Manly.
Great news on the new course and the inclusion of a South-North 12'6" division.
Seeing that SPSC is the series partner, wouldn't the insurance covered by SPSC be adequate for this event and that full SPSC members would NOT also have to join Paddle NSW to be covered?
Pretty excited about this afternoon. Conditions are looking great.![]()
Please come and support this race.
JPP are trying run Australia's (and possibly the Worlds) first downwind series with a "legitmate" waiting period in order to optimise conditions.
Casso - I think you are right about SPSC membership and insurance.
And best of all - beers and sausages at WSS afterwards - that is what its all about ![]()
1PM rego at Collaroy Basin (Fishermans) for 2PM start.
Please bring Exact money either $20 or $35 if you are not a paddle NSW member as the race is running under Paddle NSW structure.
If you have a $50 you will be given a Red shirt as we do not have change
Cheers
Sam
A big thank you to Sam Williams from Jamieson Park Paddle and Sam Parker from WindSurfnSnow for organising an unbelievable race today from Long Reef to Newport. This is one of the first downwind series that is flexible not only on courses raced but the day raced over the designated weekend.
It takes a lot of time and effort to put a series like this together and your efforts are greatly appreciated by the ever expanding DW crew in Sydney. Thanks to Kissa, Chucky and Paul 5.0 who have also had alot of input into this event. Also thanks to Pete Morgan who supported on the jet ski. (Glad it was a flying fish you were pointing to Pete and not the big great white that hangs off Longie. You scared the crap out of me)
How was the run? I woke up this morning with the sore throat from hell & was a disappointed piker... Next time.
