I am looking at changing from a cruising 10'6" to a 14' board for fitness in relatively flat but sometime fast-moving tidal paddling. I currently use a 90sq" paddle which is a good workout for the hour long paddles that I do on a board not really suited for the job. Does anyone have a suggestion about using a bigger blade size when I go to the 14'? I was thinking that as a 14' board has more glide a larger paddle might be needed to keep the same level of exertion. I like to paddle at a lower cadence and enjoy the sence of having a workout as I tend to only have time for relatively short sessions.
Paddle blade size is a very personal thing, it depends how much you weigh, how fast or slow your stroke cadence is and ultimately how strong you are. A paddle will also dictate how well you perform and also how hard it is on your body. Couple that to shaft stiffness and your general fitness you'll need to give some serious thought to what you buy.
many people make the wrong assumption that a bigger blade means more speed, this is very much not the case.
get good advice and don't just take what some shop has on the shelf, do your research.. which includes demoing anything before you buy it.
happy to advise.

So if you were looking for a cruising paddle what factors would you take into account?
