Just a heads up. Was in Bali last week got into trouble after I hired a surf SUP and went out at crowded small Serangan Break (around the corner from Sanur). Apparently as I was later today by the owner they have banned surf SUPs out there and aren't allowed to drop anyone there anymore.
I'm guessing because everyone is trying.to make money off teaching surfing?
Everywhere else nearby, surf was flat. I would.be really pxssed if I'd brought over my board for this.
As it turned out I bought tow foil gear and there was not enough swell for that either. Wet seasons also sucks as there is alot of junk in the water.
I went sup surfing in sanur last January. I got chewed out for catching waves that the Japanese tourists were paying to get lessons on. Fun times.
To be honest, SUP + crowded small break = looking for trouble everywhere...
As opposed to sup + crowded big break? lol

Colas
Serangan isnt really a small break
Multiple take off points and very suitable for SUP
I have been SUP Surfing there for approx 10 years and was always a great wave to SUP
Greed has gotten in the way of fairness
No reason to ban SUPS at Serangan other than greed
As opposed to sup + crowded big break? lol
In my (limited) experience, the bigger waves acts as a natural filter, meaning less trouble.Granted good surfers or SUPers can also be assholes. But competent big wave surfers and SUPers understand each other, and non-competents (like me) are humbled by the conditions. So in practice it degenerates less than in small waves.
