Hopefully some of the more travelled Breezers can help a bunch of Sydney newbies with some Maui race questions. There are about 5 of us who are planning on doing some races in Maui this year. Questions we have are:
1. Is it better to do the race in May (Olukai) or the race(s) in July...we hear the winds are a bit more consistent in July?
2. Where is the best place to find accomodation?
3. How do you get hold of a board? Can you rent? Or is it better to buy and then try to bring it back?
And, any other info that could be provided would be much appreciated.
Cheers
Dave
Go to Maui in July the Naish race is THE BEST SUP race in the world. If I was you I'd be in Maui for all of July you will not be Disappointed. Very hard to hire a Downwind SUP board on Maui. Truly your best bet is to order a SUP from SIC 4/8 months waiting list! or Naish pick it up at Kahalui Maui so you have a board to play with then sell the SUP before you come home to Australia or put SUP in a container & ship it home. other than that its a big headache to hire a Downwind SUP on Maui as it will save you from just pi##ing into the wind. hope this helps or just send me a private email.
Aussie interview on Maliko Maui
July is a great time to be in Maui for Downwinders,
Just watch out for us when you come past uppers this year, we will be windsurfing!
PS: Try not to leave a car at Mailko,
Accomodation, try VRBO website, plenty of options for $100 US a night at Keihi or even Haiku,
Thanks for the heads up guys. Phil, looking forward to checking out the vids. BTW - looking like a bit of a crew from the Northern Beaches of Sydney going in July. We are even starting to "talk" about doing some "proper" SUP training.
Cheers Dave
