Hi Guys,
Frustrated Old surfer/Sup rider here in Far North QLD. As most locals know occasionally there is a little wave around these parts as messy as it can be. However very occasionally it is, or was, quite reasonable. I used to ride with a few at Kewarra Beach and round that area. Had a few really good rides there and at Rocky point many moons ago.
I moved a little away, but not far, however heard many had faded away due to increased Croc sightings. Not sure if true? it does make me a bit nervous though.
I went out to Franklin Island some weeks ago and there in front of me was quite a reasonable wave. Right hander. Nice shape. Pretty small but conditions were not large in general. It wrapped around the south end and then had protection from the wind. Maybe when swell is up it has real potential. I think possibly however the reef is a bit sharp and unforgiving there? Not sure?
My point is i am looking for anyone similar to me. Are there some Sup guys around these parts that are actively look for waves. Maybe have secret reef spots that surf well and are away from the snappies. Safe beach breaks where a few crew meet up occasionally?
When i get a little keen, like i am now, its just not as much fun to search this stuff out alone, or even ride alone.
Anyway i am really just trying to jump back in the game. Maybe there is a whole crew out there who have been happily playing along for years in the Cairns area. Love to meet if there is.
Any help from FNQ Sup's would be much appreciated.
Cheers CoopsSnoops
Up at Yorkey's Knob is where you will find the surfing crew and check in at (I think) Kite Rites. Chris as I remember was his name????

Thanks Piros. Will send some pics when we hunt some of those waves.
When I was living in Port Douglas we used to surf at Rachit Bay. Actually got some half decent waves there from time to time. This was about 25yrs ago!
I still get out at Kewarra most weeks flat water downwind or little waves (low tide) .
and yes the ?? has been there in the last few weeks it was up the creek in Southern Cnr.
I have tried different weather patterns to all the spots mentioned and quite a few others in the above posts all have there own requirements of wind swell and tide just like any surf spot and I have worked out that unless you have a really big boat to get out to the outer reef the waves in the tropical north are little and only rideable for a short tide period.
I have found Kewarra and Little Yorkies Knob beach(marina entrance) are the most consistent and great indicators, if there is a wave at either of these spots then most of the North of Palm Cove spots are also rideable.
Recently I have been enjoying the double island reef breaks but it's a big paddle on small boards so I use my 14' and just enjoy the Glide.
I have been watching the foilers forums with interest I just can't justify that sort of money to try something that I am not sure if there is enough energy in our wind waves to make and keep them Foiling..
I did see Chris (mentioned above) learning to Foil behind a boat but I haven't seen him to see if he ever moved that to the SUP.
