If you haven't already noticed the banner and checked it out here on the breeze, the Kirra Challenge Race is now open for entries. Just submitted as an event on this site also, so details should be up by tomorrow.

We are hoping for fair weather and at least a bit of swell to make it interesting.

Just to let everyone know you don't need race board to enter this race , so if your half interested just grab a 12-0 and enter , I have also sponsored $1,000 in cash and prizes for the over 40's so us old fellas don't have to compete against whippets like Jacko

Hi Angie, the start is going to be staggered with the 12'6 (pro) and 14's (open) going off together, and then the Amateurs 30sec or so after. If there are enough girls in the pro category, we could start girls in between at 30sec after guys, but rather see the girls mix it up with the blokes and give em a run for their money.

I don't have any 12'6 Race sups handy, but have a couple of 12' and under boards for the Ams.

SUPSA, has put up $400 ($200 for Mens Pro & $200 for Womens Pro) for "First to First Turn Dash for Cash", so the first guy and girl around the first turn can will win some $$$ even if they don't win the race.

Peiter and Sandra from SUPWorld Magazine have also put up $100 cash to go into the Pro class as a mystery prize. Paddlers will have to be at the Presso, even if they finished at the blunt end, to find out who wins it...

G'day Piros
Will the Low Pressure BOP board be a Pig or will Lightning Strike. I never thought I'd give BOP a go (I'm to old for this) I'm more into Downwinding or just surfing

Phil the reason the 40+ has 14's is so many guys have them and I truely think the 12-6 will be the best board for getting out through the Kirra shore , mid and back breaks , I just didn't want guys who own a 14 standing on the beach not competing. The BOP style race doesn't come down to the fastest... but the best at getting out and getting around the cans.

Prizes in the 40+ will go down to 5th place.

I am not sure I understand the registration form
If I am over 40, do I just tick "over 40" or do I have to choose between "pro" and "open" and tick one o these 2 as well
I am using a 12'6 anyway so if I am over 40 what difference does it make to choose pro or open if you end up in the over 40 classification????? (or do you end up in both category? For example "open" and "over 40")
Just wondering because personally as long as I start with everybody else I am pretty happy.

40+ is 14 and under , it's a separate race for the retired athletes who still have something to prove. you can still enter separately in the pro or amateur division but that's another race.

Are you sure rob?
This was my question by mail

Hi
Regarding the categories Pro, Open and over 40's, do they all start at the same time or are they different races at different times like at the battle of padlle.
Thanks
Alain

and here was the answer I got

Hi Alain,
It's just the one race, but categories are staggered in 2 lines, so 12'6 and 14's(open) go first, then 30sec later the Amateurs take off.
Regards,
Scott Penwarn

I am even more confused now because I don't mind to do the over 40 but I really want to do the "open" or "pro" to be part of the "real" start . And if its 2 races then I'll do both...

Gonna be good fun day.

Come on girls it doesn't matter if you will only have a smaller board, it's all about getting involved and fun.

Ultimately it's Scotty's call but to answer your questions there will be no drug testing, not that I think you need it Phil.

It will be bulk fun mate just get out there and enjoy it.

I say drug test "Macca" that boy is on frekin fire in the last week at training!! Gonna be sic pro mens race. Remember to be nice to the girls boys, we don't mean to get in your way LOL.
Going by all the training going on in/out thru currumbin surf lately, i'd say it's gonna be a super close race between the pro guys & girls.

SIC!!

Sorry for delay in answering some of the questions posted here about the race guys, my wife delivered us a new baby boy last night, so been a bit otherwise occupied for last couple days, and haven't had a chance to check out the breeze.

Essentially, there is only one race, but with different categories to try to cater for all paddlers, as well as lap differentiation between Pro/Open and Amateur.

Amateur is for ANY paddler on a SURF (non race style) sup with length 12' or under. In Amateur category, there is no placing or prize differentiation between men or women. Amateurs must complete two full laps of the course to be eligible for prizes.

Pro is for ANY paddler on a 12'6" or under RACE style sup. Paddlers can enter Pro category on a SURF style sup 12'6" or less in length, but must complete the full three laps of the course. Pro category has separate placings and prizes for both men and women, plus the first paddler under 18yrs old (on the day of race) to complete the course.

Open is for ANY paddler on a sup OVER 12'6" and UNDER 14". Due to the format of the course and in consideration of the other categories, sups over 14' or with rudder systems, will not be included. No placing or prize differentiation between men or women in this category. Open paddlers must complete three full laps of the course.

Over 40's is open to paddlers 40years or older on the day of the race on ANY of the above category sups. Placings and prizes are at the discretion of Von Piros Productions. Open paddlers must complete three full laps of the course.

It would be great to see all paddlers start at the same time, but considering the difference in distance between Pro and Am (2laps vs 3laps), it is not necessary and could create problems.
