There's a bunch of these things coming.. the segway was supposed to 'revolutionise human transport' and all this hype. Turns out it's only useful in certain circumstances and it was just kinda before it's time - you're just not cool on one. We're on the brink of a whole new bunch of reinvented segways..
The onewheel is cooler than the others in how it goes off road, and on the beach. Pick of the bunch if you like off-road. Plus surf stance, although I think you won't get much carve outta those tyres.
For around town, one of these two designs would offer some other potential advantages including price, range, faster, bigger diameter wheels, and easier to carry on public transport etc.. Both of these styles have a whole bunch of brands but essentially the same, and about $250 each in bulk on Alibaba and ranging up to $1000 with some branding and markups slapped on top.
1500USD + shipping.....ouch!
Yes.. But way cheaper (and cooler) than a Segway.. ![]()

I just picked up one of these bad boys a few weeks ago. Aussie owned and designed. Absolutely loving it.
It does close to 40km/h with 40km range. The battery is built into the deck of the board so most people don't even realise I'm on an electric until I go screaming up a hill without a push haha.
The trucks and wheels are interchangeable so you can go with the off-road setup for dirt/grass and standard longboard wheels for smooth surfaces.
My favourite feature though is actually having brakes, a foreign concept for skateboarders.
I'm with you David.... I really, really want one of those!
They look like heaps of fun and good for 'surf' training as well.
I'd be outside in the dark right now if I had one.
Imagine belting down a hill on one! WAHOO! ![]()
