Hi guys,
Away on holidays, got to Noosa and had a ball on small beginner waves. Got a bit too excited at one point and put a couple of nasty splits in the nose of my Sunova One by hitting the sand.All the repairers are flat out so I'm going to attempt to fix myself. Any comments would be appreciated but I was thinking a trip to Bunnings, sanding the spot, a strip of fibreglass matt across the nose and cover it with polyester resin. Maybe doing this a couple of times. How does this sound? I'm assuming not epoxy?
The board is standing on its nose now to drain. I'm guessing a bit of water got in.

Don't use any resin except epoxy.
Might have to leave it to drain for a week or 2 before repairing. If you haven't done a repair before check out Sunova's website and Burt shows you how to fix dings.
Don't buy your repair kit from bunnings unless its wet and dry sand paper.

It's pretty full on. The bottom shot shows the worst side of the nose. Any suggestions really appreciated.

If you do so, and then you do repair yourself later don't go near it with solvents as that crack will def let it in and melt core. Likewise no polyester resin
Great thanks. Trouble is we have six weeks left of the trip. Is the tape still the best option (then dry it at home) or do I just bite the bullet and fix it now with epoxy and matting?

I would tape it as it will take a good week to dry properly without an extraction pump.
You could take the tape off when finished for the day, position so crack is at bottom to drain a bit and keep from further saturation of core and re-tape when needed
Tape it now, then dry it out throughly when you get home and then get it repaired by someone reputable in epoxy repairs in your area.
Water is your enemy with epoxy boards. Believe me I speak from experience.

If by that you mean chopped strand mat? Then no no no - most chopped strand is designed for polyester and does not work well with epoxy due to coatings or binder or some rubbish in it. You want proper 4oz (ish) plain weave or satin weave fibreglass cloth. Forget anything about boat repair or Bunnings stuff
If its dry now, a good option is epoxy Knead-It or similar to fill it up as it sets really hard. When you get home you can grind it back (along with that displaced glass) to get levels right then go over the whole thing with a couple of layers of glass.
There are a lot of board repairs people bring to me that have Knead-It and its so tough that if its not a massive amount I do leave it there quite often and just glass over and fair it off.

Lucky Mark, I was thinking plain weave but yeah.... it would have looked like crap, so glad it was done professionally. Just have to learn how to turn, there are board riders everywhere here in Noosa. It's like Pitt Street!

Noosa is insanely busy especially with the swell that's around at the moment.
