I've stripped the thread on the plastic fin box on my smik hipster v1.
Does anyone know the thread size off hand so i can plug it with epoxy and re tap? my thread gauge has rusted out from lack of use since i got off the tools a few years back.
Thanks.
I've had 2 smiks do this so it's obviously a common thing.
I actually put thread tape around my grub screws which held them in alot better.
thanks mate, i'll wrap the others in thread tape
I always had my fins work loose and it stopped that which was good. I used to have to carry a fin key on my leash so I could tighten them mid sesh.
Just noticed you're on the coast as well.
The simplest solution is to use wider grub screws with the same thread size.
Surf shops should have them. Gong sells them for instance.
When screwing fins in, I move them laterally 3-4 time with my hand, and the re-tighten them a bit. They dont get loose afterwards.

Yep, agree with Colas on this one.
I've had 2 fin boxes crack through the threaded hole on my hipster 9' and 10' long boards. I filled these holes with epoxy and drilled and tapped new holes from the other side of the box. I use longer 10-24 fcs screws to retain my fins which uses more of the thread. and like Colas said a good wiggle and re-tighten when changing fins.
Excellent boards,Smik ,but the fin boxes let them down IMO.one of my favourite boards needed 2 fin box replacements, sold it on
that triggered a sequence of purchases of inferior boards ! And lots of $$$ ,all my choice of course, the only brand I have not had a problem with is Jimmy Lewis![]()

Yes mate, but at the other end. I live at Peregian Beach - I think you're in the Clowntown area? Hope you manage to get a wave at Moffats this weekend. It, Carty's & Noosa, will be the pick over Easter, if you like sharing!
Thanks everyone for the replies. i reckon I'll get a set of oversize screws, drill & tap the stripped box to suit, and fit the other 3 too as a preventative
Your local Bolt n Nut wholesale should have a good selection of grub screws. I agree with others in using longer threads for more hold.
Happy repairs for Easter
