Hey there
Anyone recommend a good place in Sydney to learn to sup surf ?
Ideally looking for somewhere North side, with small'ish non-choppy waves & most importantly not crowded :)
I'm very likely to be a menace & want to keep well away from others !
Thanks
Mark
South Palm Beach....obviously away from the flags. Sometimes you get a small wave at Fairy Bower around from shelley Beach at Manly although there can tend to be surfers out that might not like you being there.
Mark every day is different of the Northern beaches. It really is a mixed bag and each spot needs a different wind and swell direction.
This time of year if you get down early on an offshore wind day and swell under 1.2m these are some of the pics up to Collaroy.
During the week Shelley Beach and Manly to South Steyne can be a good spot if the wind and swell is from the South. It does get crowded on weekends.
The next good spot is 'no mans land' just North of Dee Why but you need to check the conditions - low swell, light wind.
Long Reef point and Collaroy can also produce good conditions but it changes daily depending on wind and swell.
Start at Kiddies at Palmie.
When you can stand and actually catch a wave, try Avalon on a high tide (above 0.9m) and head to mid beach. That is between the Mals in the North and the short boards in the south. The waves a full and don't close out like the rest of Palmie.
There is a small tribe of SUPS at Nth Av early most mornings, quite a bit of fun. When you see a fat old dude falling off a huge white SUP at North Av, say hello to me.
Hi Mate, there are plenty of spots to cruise around and I am sure you will find somewhere to practice. Although I have to say, despite previous comments I would stay away from Kiddies Corner at Palmy. As the name would indicate it is a place widely used by groms learning and surf school students. Just in IMO not the safest place to get your sea legs on the SUP. Plenty of space down the beach at Palmy as you head north.
I have found a really good place to learn some skills if your a newby is mona basin Bomby when it is breaking. It can get bumpy sometimes which helps with your balance, it's a interesting place to read, which makes it good fun. Finally, the benefit you can't really short board surf it, so you will more than likely have it to yourself, and it breaks into deep water so if you get pumped you can gather yourself, and get back out easily enough.
Just a thought, have fun and see you out there sometime.
