I have seen Garmin, Suunto and NK Speedcoach products - but has anyone tried Coxmate GPS for training? It is an Australian device. On paper it looks the goods with a 10Hz refresh rate, programmable workouts and and good functionality.

Only caveat I can see is the PC software is free for 12 months and then $50 per annum after that.

If I can use it without the software it looks a ripper for around $300.

Looking for feedback before I drop the hammer.

Thoughts breezers?

It is not clear if you download the data as gpx (loosing potentially some information like stroke rate). Also not clear if stroke rate is for sup or only for two handed paddle sports. Also check if it doppler or not (more precise). Otherwise would look good if the suction cup is bullet proof.

My step daughter is a competitive rower and has used this one for coaching purposes, it is good for coxed and coxless boats and the stoke rate in a boat is nothing like a SUP so I would be concerned about how it read your stroke rate. She bought her own unit recently and went for a Garmin Watch set up which did everything an elite rower needs. BUT it also has a SUP setting seperate from Rowing which suggests there is a difference?

I've spoken to a tech from Garmin and apparently the accelerometer is configured to be on the wrist and if placed in a visible place on a board does not work with the same accuracy, hence my pursuit of options where I don't have to stop paddling to monitor data (especially stroke rate, ratio and heart rate).

The Garmins are great kit tho, just not what I need atm.

Further reading into the Coxmate tells how you can adjust the sensitivity of the stroke detection to accomodate different stroke dynamics, ie. rowing (slower) or outrigger/sup (faster). With a 10Hz refresh rate it is also about 10 times faster than the wrist-based Garmins (once per second according to the tech man from Garmin).

Don't get me wrong I'd love a Fenix and have wanted one for a while, but not being able to afford both I think a board mounted GPS suits my training needs better.

And yes I have considered phone app style data but don't really want to stuff around with cases and waterproofing, or have to explain why my work phone has water damage.

Thank you for your replies. I think I'm going to have roll the dice and go with the Coxmate.

Then one day I might get a Garmin too to complete the ensemble!

10Hz seems fairly high as the best Doppler is 5Hz. Should give lost of data. The NK is a proven device but I do not thing that it records data which is a pitta. I have a Makai which is very nice and "ergo-dynamic" but also do not record data so I also wear a Garmin Vivoactive HR which has stoke rate but is as you pointed out wear on the wrist....fairly cheap here.

Not yet. I keep looking at them and talking how I could use one but need to pay for new boards so keeps getting postponed.
And my wife bought me a Fenix for my birthday so lessened the need - still want one tho.
