Video and stills taken by Aquarian at makorori point last weekend........she hasn't taken her "video editing 101 course".....so have whacked them together into a video and added some sounds (I really really want a camera like hers)
This morning there was bugger all wind......glassy conditions.....Saturday morning......and no one wanted these waves??
Surfing alone!
I surfed beautiful offshore barrels yesterday. 3.5 hrs and 2 waves!
Why? Sharing with 100+ others.
It sure was a very good day Surfing J, the surf looked perfect on the cam's .
To bad I wasn't there
@ Grizzy, how cold is the water over there, it looks like a fun point, specialy on the cleaner pics.

the water temperature is pretty good. Friday morning at town beach went out at 6 am with just board shorts and a rash shirt and wasn't cold......more depends on the wind and air temperature. Those crowds sound alarming.....we think the point is crowded once there is more than 10 or 12 people out.
One person out is definitely best. Was just me out for first hour. Then one more person came out so two people for the next hour....I retreated when another 4 or 5 came out.
pretty darn nice.... I'll take those waves and crowd!
well there are lots of surfers in Gisborne........but happily there are only a few who will drive to the beach in the dark and paddle out when you can't really see what is happening. No shortage of waves here especially in the winter time.....giz picks up swell from the south and the east and the north....so the locals tend to be a little lazy
I spent some time in Gisborne in 84'.... great waves, nice people.... I love that area..... who knows, maybe we shared a session back then
1984.....have been a bit of a transient seasonal worker. Might have still been a knee boarder back in those days (of course from that vid it looks like I am still a knee boarder ha ha). Then I got a mal so could surf on smaller surf days. Then got a sup so could at least get some exercise on days when no surf. Think am up to about sup board 8 or 9 these days. Thinking about Sunova 9'5 speed for my next board.....11 months away from being an "old retired pensioner" so I would have to go and surf bali at least once

Is that the old 12'6 PSH you're on?
Yep is the 12'6.....fun board to ride. Its a bit tippy in its own way. Found it a bit hard to readjust to my smaller boards so am just surfing that at the moment. Was a bit cautious about taking it out in certain surf conditions.....but now I take it out in anything :)
I don't think it has really.....went out at town beach this morning.....gentle offshore breeze but ridiculously high tide/full moon. Not perfect but quite exciting fun little peaks rearing up every 5 minutes or so. Me the only surfer in sight.....but hey let's not tell the whole world
But where would you Aussies go? To NZ where you might have to wear a wetsuit.....or to Bali where you can surf in warm water and board shorts?
Am hoping your answer is Bali
Yeah, but watch out or with advertising like that you might start attracting us Aucklanders over that way.....
all my 30 + years of surfing both the North and South islands before moving to Noosa I have never had problems with crowds (until I moved to Noosa lol)
oh Makarori is no secret, there are so many quality breaks North and South of Gizzy not to mention Mahia. There are so many surf spots on both coasts mostly accessible and if you know the conditions and prepared to drive you will score. As for an over abundance of surf tourist invading local spots, nah won't happen. NZ is to far off the beaten track.
ive never been to Bali, the place just doesn't interest me, I always travel back to NZ for surf, my next trip back will be South Island staying with whanau, Mangamanu, Kaikoura and CHCH beachies for surf. I lived in CHCH for 9 years before moving to Aus, so I still have my 5 mil wettie, booties and gloves lol.
Oh HB
Jaffas wont go further south when you have the Coromandel, Rags or Sandies up north. Gizzies to isolated, worth the roadie though.
stay stoked
