Just a quick one to vent some stoke I have had in the last week or so as a result of having a SUP in the quiver.
Super small but clean conditions during the week at what is usually the most crowded wave in the metro area saw me have a few little magic dawn sessions with maximum stoke - only a few out, a relaxed vibe and some pretty fun little runners.
If I wasn't into the SUP's and didn't have one in my quiver I would have been relegated to a swim, There is just something really nice about the vibe when the waves are small and clean, I would probably prefer lesser conditions and a better crew and vibe then better days with all that goes with that in my neck of the woods.
When people comment on how a SUP is perfect when the conditions are tiny I agree but also add that in good waves they are epic as well, the only conditions I am not comfortable in on the SUP are crowded waves or spots with a small take off area.
On the weekend the swell was up a bit and I knew the crowd would be on so I grabbed the shorty and practiced some intentional suffering but no ill feelings towards it, got into a couple but the whole experience of haggling for a wave and just accepting my days of surfing a shorty well are past me, reinforced that the SUP is my craft of choice...as long as the crowd is down and the stoke levels are high!
Yes Souwester! Such a great yarn mate - absolutely agree with you and definitely vibing your positivity and stoke - and no doubt you were grinning like a madman. ![]()
I'm actually chuckling out loud to myself - can fully dig exactly what you're saying.

Sounds like a blast! Just had a session where surf was good but peaks too crowded for my taste. We had a new moon and really low tides, right at end of session a sandbar way outside starts to break. No shortboarders wanna paddle way out or mess with mushier wave. I paddle out and wait for set big enough to break, get big mellow wave that goes forever then jacks up on the beach and wrecks me:)
I shortboarder for 30 years. I have been supping for the last two and I can't stop smiling. The fun factor is off the chart.
I always like it in small waves but in bigger waves it is amazing. No turning back for me, having way to much fun.
I'm with you Souwester
Thanks Souwester, so good to feel the stoke and pure joy that comes with SUP life... and the stories that follow ![]()
I travel for empty waves all the time, so yesterday found me catching a solo session in perfect head high, left hand peelers!!
Good to hear the stoke yarn has related to the crew, its all about having fun and working out how to do it no matter what stands in your way!
I mainly surf beach breaks and they change all the time, I can totally relate to a peak appearing with a tide change and making my way over there solo and bagging out on fun waves!
Sometimes the crew that are surfing make their way over to spoil my fun, only for the conditions to continue to change and I move on or back to where they were ha ha
STC - love your surf vids and posts - you put the yards in and score - inspirational and I hope to be surfing at your age!
