Hi,
Here are some results i know of from todays Excel Ocean Race.

Conditions were a hard SW side offshore wind about 9 - 14knots. No swell but some small runners if you were on a bigger enough sup to get them.
Ideal Sup today was long and with a Rudder to push against the side wind without a rudder you were dead!
Unreal start line with approx - 150 paddlers, mostly stand up's. People paddle their 9'6's thru to 17fters.

Hope fully someone has some pics and will post them up here.

Unlimited Open Mens
1st - James Billy Watson (16ft Lakuikai)
2nd - Kelly Margrets (15ft DC)
3rd - Woogie Marsh (17ft Naish)
4th - Paul Jackson (14ft naish Javlin)
5th - Nick Mac Donalde (17ft Naish)
6th - Steven Walker (17ft Naish)

12'6 mens
1st - Troy Pease (Secret agent)
2nd - Chris Maynard
3rd - ? sorry i cant remember

Womens Sup Unlimited
1st - Alison (17ft Naish)
2nd - Sue Sheard (17ft DC)
3rd - Angie Jackson (12'6 Sic)
4th - Jasliegh Geary (14ft Glide)
sorry im not sure after that, but there was a record of 12 female sup paddlers!!

Over 40's
1st - Mark Waldeck
2nd - Dale Champan
3rd - sorry not sure

It was a great day but MAN one side of my upper body is killing LOL!! I think this event will be even bigger next year.

I'm not sure on times but i think surfing queensland site will have them up next few days.

That wind was a killer with no rudder, plus picking the wrong line doesn't help. Was awesome seeing all the SUP'ers there.

Thanks to Surfing QLD, Xcel and all the other sponsers for the race.

Here is some video and pics I took on the iPhone from the Thrower Drive bridge, just before the finish line. Hope it works, I'm using Vimeo for the first time, and found it a bit of a mission to get sorted...

Didn't stay there till the last paddlers came thru, so sorry if I missed you (and for the finger over the lens Macca). The sequence of paddlers is in order of finishing, and you can get a bit of an idea of time gaps from the boats etc in the background.

Was a great race to watch, I know how hard it would've been with the wind, and there looked like some great battles going on. You can see in the vid just how close some of the paddlers were, eg Kelly and Woogie (2nd & 3rd), and also the girls.

Yeeeeew, made the video! Stoked! Thanks Scotty. The guy just in front and just behind me were my partners on the scenic tour out somewhere near the Horizon. Hahah. The guy on the Lahui Kai just in front of me just came 10th or something in Molokai so I was stoked to be going the wrong way with such a legend.

The numbers were around 150 I think. I recon sup racing has finally arived in Australia and I think a few people have now realised the potential for some very big races in Australia. If we can these numbers plus get some racers from overseas who knows where it could go!!!!

Great video Scotty, was expecting to see you in the race rather then taking photos and video, but i'm sure everyone is glad that you took the shots otherwise we wouldn't have something to remember the race by, so thanks!

I think we can all thank the SW wind for our tightness today.

I was standing on Currumbin Rock and looking back towards Snapper there was alot of people "walking on water". Much more than I anticipated. It was a great sight.

There seemed to be a bit of confusion at the turning bouy into Currumbin Creek as to weather to stay outside it or go inside. In hindsight it would of been better to go around it as my young bloke and a mate as well as a few other kids were surfing of the rock and then had lots of craft going thru the take off zone staying close to the rock to catch runners. No harm was done while I was there.

We then went up to Winders Park fo a look.

As competitors we were told before the race to ignore that bouy at the mouth of the river and come in as we saw fit. And after such tough conditons, it was nice to come in, jump on a wave, have a 30 sec break before running accross the quicksand sandbank, board and all, and paddling too the finish line. Great experiance

Good conditions (edit) on todays paddle with Lacey to Miami / Nobbys, poor performance on my behalf. Lacey was linking 6 runs together for my poultry 1. Flat batteries for me, still feeling last weeks flu.

Time for a surf trip to an island with a couple of reef breaks and my favourite shortboards. YESSSSSS!

Well, that's how it looked like from the back of the pack... litterally! :)
I used my 10"6 C4 Pohaku which I use every week at the Alley when I plod along...
I'm pretty sure it was one of the smallest sup present on the day.

1st one is at the start, the 2nd one when pondering where the hell everyone had buggered off! I didnt take more after that and started singing in french to fill the void until the jetskis came for a little chat :)

That said I enjoyed every bit of it even if I have to say the entry of the creek was a big let down from mother nature! It was certainly testing after paddling for that freaking long... I'm happy with this 1st effort considering water wasnt part of my world 3yrs ago, let alone suppin 6 months ago.
It was nice to experience that "community" feeling at the end too... the burger and the beer went down a treat :)

Fantastic effort by you Minkee ! Well done on your first race. And thanks for taking the time to grab some pics. And welcome to Seabreeze.

Regarding the burgers and beers.... I meant to write this a few days ago. In over 18 years of outrigger racing and attending countless presentations and after parties I can honestly say I have NEVER been to one that offer FREE BEERS AND BURGERS to not only all competitors but to their families and all who attend. And as many as you want too until they run out !! Well done Chris & SUPSA !!

And this has been the way at the last two SUP events on the Gold Coast (Roar & Excel). No wonder I finally stood up to paddle !!! Great atmosphere, support and organisation.

Billabong needing to give some exposure to one of their other brands!?!

Either way, good on 'em for putting on a great event!
