It's what SUP is made for, basically.
For flat water there are many much faster and easier paddlecraft. And the performance of a surf SUP can't match a surfboard. But with downwinding, in the right conditions and with the right rider you can be almost as fast as any other craft, but you have the added benefit of the feeling of surfing rather than just piloting your vessel, which is highly addictive.
It's ironic perhaps that SUPs these days worldwide are used most to do things that are the least fun, and are the most divorced from the sport's origins.
