Sorry, no pics, need Boardies over wettie and W/P camera !!
Today I had a nice solo paddle from Juc to Boobs (near Winki) and back.
Solo - well accompanied by the Naish 14 of course ![]()
Just checking out the scenery... no sign of sharks or whales today. Very slight NW breeze, paddling into it, and I was lucky that picked up a fraction, and I paddled back with a WNW over the left shoulder.
Deep water, deep aqua colours.... it was high tide, and the waves were thundering into the caves at Steps & Sparrows..... (a section of cliff just near Bird Rock, Jan Juc). There was backwash / cross chop coming back out of the caves at high tide today.
I was going to go all the way to Winki & Bells, but I kept seeing overhead sets rolling through Winki and Bells (swell was bigger than I expected), so I bailed back to Juc and changed boards for a nice session at Winki (normal surfing).
How Winki was named.... and my funny story about Boobs....
I understand a surfer's girlfriend in the 60's (if you're 35-45, it could be your mum !) had a nickname for sex.... "Winki-Pop".... He thought Winki (the wave) was as good as this... !!
The surf break known a Boobs, is just next to Winki, but it is often never as good, as long, or as big..... I wonder if that is why it is called Boobs. Close to Winki-Pop, still very good, but not quite as good.... ![]()
Oh, MA+ rating, sorry !
I think Boobs is named after a guy who's nick name was "Boobs".....not sure though.
and a story on Winki Pophttp://www.winkipopsurf.com.au/Main.asp?_=The%20name
Oh, this topic could deteriorate really quickly.... was he a boob man ??
I'm not sure either.... that was just my "boobs" theory!
I think boobs got its name from the shape of the cliffs. If looked at from above the cliffs form the shape of boobs. That’s what I was led to believe years ago anyway.
And I think contrary to popular belief, Sparrows is named because years ago there were bush's on the cliff that were full of sparrows (birds). Not because of a bloke named sparrow who use to also surf there (who is a legend anyway)
I could look at anything and see boobs..
.. I like that reason better than a guy nick named boobs.. I wonder if he had manboobs?. ![]()
I'll ask sparrow next time I pass through Torquay.. He'll know for sure.. I wonder what Dean and Rich think?
DJ
If Rich didnt know, he could ask Mike or Matt D or Boardroom Bob and one of them would know for sure.
Thanks for clearing that up Rich !!
Either way, it's quite fitting that Boobs & Winki-Pop are close together !! ![]()

And in between is the Valley, rhymes with Belly! (off the end of lowers, between Winki & Boobs !)
Hi Guys. Sorry for bringing up this topic again.
Earlier tonight I was talking to one of the crew, who were the first guys to surf Bells Beach in the early 1960's. This guy grew up in Torquay as a kid.
He said one of the Bells beach crew, named Brian Trist always said to the other guys "Im going to surf that spot one day (Winki Pop)"
One day at Bells, while the crew were sitting on the beach, Brian Trist got up, grabbed his board and walked to Winki Pop and paddled out and surfed it. The Guy I was talking to, thinks this happened about 1962. He was there the day Brian surfed this new spot. Brian got to name the new surf spot. While walking on the rocks at Winki Pop, he kept standing on that seaweed that pops when you crush it with your foot. So he named it Winki "pop" after that seaweed.
He also confirmed that Boobs is named after Bob (Boobs) Johnson. Just for some more history, apparently Bob Johnson’s dad was in the Australian Test Cricket some time back then.
He said Winki Pop is defiantly not named after some rude terms or woman, or anything like that.
