Hi everyone, after two great days of surf, the bill came due this morning.

Yesterday I was riding the Naish Maddog 9x32, the surf on the sets was well overhead on a punchy beach break. It was the first time I had found the limit of the width of the Maddog as the waves had plenty of push and the width in the tail was making turning difficult. I was really having to nurse the bottom turns and the board was not really sitting in the water.

So this morning I took the 10x29 Nalu instead, I was out well before sunrise had thanks to mothers day had the first 40 minutes alone Even then it was only a couple of guys that appeared and we caught many great waves.

The Nalu was in its element, the swell had dropped a little but the sets still had plenty of size and push. The Nalu sat in the water and jumped out of the bottom turns, so much better than the Maddog handled the same waves. I had so many great waves, lefts and rights, being a natural footer I really find the narrowness of the Nalu great on my backhand.

As the tide dropped to low, the rights turned on and the big left peaks were not as regular. I managed my wave of the day with a right hander deep behind the peak and the Nalu flew down the line easily coming around the sections. Happy with life I paddled back out right into a big left hand peak, after a few hours of riding I had confidence in my feet and pivoted the Nalu around and dropped in. A nice bottom turn and a few rollers down the line and all was great.

Then the end section stood up and with less water on the bank I was a little slow, or a little greedy for one more turn and could not get over the lip in time to beat the closeout. Still I had been washed around a few times this morning and it did not feel that bad to me, I glanced at the board as it came out of the white water, OH NO...

Creased right through the deck and both rails broken...

As I was taking in that disaster the next wave rolled though and took the board for another tumble, this time it somehow took out two fins...

I have no idea how that happened?

So I now have one second hand Nalu if anyone wants it

Sad to have lost a great board, I only hope the local importer has a few new ones in stock and the good wife is in a giving mood

Still I cannot feel sad as the rides the Nalu gave me this morning will live in my mind for a very long time.

Have a great Sunday all.

Stephen.

Damn mate.

I reckon more Nalu Pro's have folded over the years than just about any other board. It's why they've changed constructions so many times. It's a shame as they surf so well.

I thought Naish had mitigated the risk by adding 15L and a bit of width... but I guess it can happen to any board if it's in the wrong spot at the wrong time.

It does tend to happen to longboard sup's more often than regular surf shapes... narrow, thin, long...

I would fix that board .. I had a mate drive under his shed with his board on a big 4wd ,it folded the board ,we straightened it then glasses it
it is still going strong ,even though a bit heavier ,depends how much you love the board .

One of my surfing buddies had his 2 piece Nalu fixed ;) . Still surfs good, although it's heavier now and the flex has changed.

TBH it's better than throwing in the bin. Keep it for days where you might hit the reef etc. or to lend to friends

That sucks but you should be able to get the board repaired. The fin boxes look to have held up and must be bombproof construction. If they had torn out also it might not have been worth the cost of repair. Good that you were not on the losing end of that wave and not injured. Good luck.
