You can only admire the work of Robin Mair, in Hanalei, Kauai, HI.
Mainly surfboards, but it may give an idea or two, on construction methods, art, etc...
Fin options and ideas (he loves quads). Click through the pages for more. Only for the open minded !! ![]()

Nice guns !

Flick through, it might help you create something yourself....
And a pic of Robin (on left) part way through a gun.
The thing on the wall on the right is a clever device that can actually measure the rocker curve. Helps to duplicate, replicate, and tweak from existing boards.
Nice I luv the shape of his gun boards, quite surprised at the width 21-22 wide wider than I thought.
Roger Hall from surfline has always intrigued me, especially as I went to high school across the road from his shop and can remember calling in quite often to see what was coming out of his shaping bay
I luv his projects, the multi stringer's flex tails and fishes and those greenough inspired big racked fins. Again only for the open minded and lover of retro...![]()

I've gotten a couple fin set ups from Probox (he works there as well) - Robin's a great person to deals with and he creates some awsome/funky fins
Hi Shunter,
21+ wide is not unusual for the really big guns. Especially if you are not a young person, and not of Olympic swimming quality !!
But if you're naturally light, you would go for under 21.
(Edit - Thickness; Robin often goes well past 3" thick on the guns, but he loses loads of volume when he puts his big concaves into it - also similar to McTavish stripping away board under your chest, to straighten the rocker under your chest for improved paddling, but it leaves the rocker on the rails, for turning).
You have to remember that guys like Mick Fanning, Slater, Parko, are effectively awesome paddlers / swimmers. The Duke was a World Record holder too in his day.... probably from his training from paddling 25kg+ boards around.
Kind of similar for SUP. You want to go about as narrow as you can get away with. Extra width adds that stability, but you really don't want too much of that width on a quality wave !
And Canuk, yeah ProBox is a great system! No point preaching to the converted...
Receives FCS, but gives you loads of options, moving fins forward and back, and changing the cant.
But if you know what fins you want, and the set-out, glass-on rocks !! I am prepared to bet that some of the Pro's have done Glass-on over FCS Lugs, to make it appear they are riding FCS (at first glance).

Robin is doing a 9'10 Hollow Balsa Gun for Jeff Hackman at the moment. Hope to have some pics soon !
