I'm looking to upgrade my paddle to have a little more flex and a smaller blade.
I have had two fanatic carbon 80s.. broke them both.
Currently using a 7inch carbon paddle from surfboard warehouse. Which I've had for a longtime and it's getting a bit worn out now.
Would love to hear some opinions on paddles. What size and brand blade you use and your size.
I should mention this is for sup surfing.
My advice:
- use the lighter paddle possible, but that will not break. For me, that means around 400g for a 8" / 170cm paddle (Gong pro), I broke the lighter ones, but the 400g resist.
- use a round, small diameter shaft: it will provide the needed flex to spare your joints. Avoid big and oval shafts, they are quite stiffer.
- at 100kg weight, using sub-8' boards, I prefer a 8" blade. Lighter riders or people with boards with more glide will enjoy a 7"
- get a fluid blade shape with no heavy dihedral or fancy designs, so that you can "surf" the blade on the wave face to lean on it
I have same semi carbon starboard, Mr booth uses, got it on sale.
Also have a top of the line JP carbon paddle obtained shop used for half price. The 800 carbon paddle leaves me with no fatigue but I like the added weight of the starboard. I would go fixed shaft first then, worry about full carbon.
If you paddle daily get at least two paddles as you will want to rotate them. Paddle comfort also improves with gloves.
I have the Black Project Lava with T Handle.
90% carbon so it's got a bit of flex but is very strong.
I have had two fanatic carbon 80s.
One snapped - not by me but a stronger mate of mine.
The BP lava seems to have more power compared to the fanatic in my opinion and the t handle really helps in the surf.
If you need advice on paddles you can talk/email Chris Freeman from Black Project directly.
He's the paddle guru.
I don't have any affiliation with BP, just discovered them on my last trip to Maui.
They post world wide for $30 usd.
I use this paddle every day and love it, flex is very nice and i never get any shoulder or muscle pain from paddling with it and i do a lot of paddling. I use it for both surfing and racing.
They are already one of the best priced paddles for the high end quality at full retail but right now even cheaper.
Blade size is 84.5sq

Hey Nugdam,
I have been using a Ke Nalu xTuf Wiki 74 for the past couple of years and It is the best paddle I have had. I used (and still have) the Fanatic Carbon 75 as well which were good for size (less stress on the shoulders) but I did break a few of these as well.
I have broken a Ke Nalu shaft as well after about only 6 months, but the awesome Ke Nalu crew replaced it for me free of charge!! Really easy to dismantle the paddle pieces and re-assemble. The smaller shaft diameter on the Ke Nalu paddles is also quite comfortable compared to the larger Fanatic shaft.
I also use KeNalu with xTuf shaft. The flex is just right for my worn out shoulders. You have three other options for shaft flex and many options for blades and handles. All components are interchangeable and because you use hot glue for assembly you can easily set up the right configuration. I use Elite 84 blade for surfing at 100kg.

I was a die hard QB user until shoulder surgery and they got a bit stiff for me . Moved to the Starboard Balsa enduro and now the Carbon Endro which is so light & strong still with some give. Plenty of good ones out there , just my fav at the moment.

I do like how with Ke Nalu how you can select the head the shaft and Handel great idea.
Another vote for the Ke Nalu xTuf. Light weight and with a forgiving flex and a modular design. Tons of blade sizes and designs to work with too.
I keep a 27 North Kevlar paddle as back up for the great lifetime warranty, but its probably too big and stiff for what you are looking for.
+1 for kenalu xtuf. I have had the 60% carbon as my surf paddle for years. Great flex, and it's copped a flogging (including learning to foil) and still going strong. I recently put my 84 kohini blade on, and really like the narrow width and soft catch.
this is the one i use. its great. very light weight, big difference from my previous fanatic paddle. narrow shaft has been good for a full year though i was sceptical it would be strong enough at first. Fixed length of course. And i was plesently surprised by the price $250 i think.
i dont like the silver carbon weave though, i reakon it looks like scales of a fish. having some fish looking thing splashing around the side of your board probably isnt a great idea.
I tried most of them and I keep coming back to Quickblade trifecta vector net on general paddling and surfing ![]()

Any idea on the weight of it? Google tells me about 500grams. My current paddle is 395 grams. Quite a big difference.
The xtuff sounds good. Not sure what blade I'd put on one either.
Another vote for the Ke Nalu Wiki 74 / X-Tuf S shaft.
I have 2 [different lengths for the variety of boards I use]. One of them is my original Blade/shaft which I think is around 7 yrs old, lots of use, still going strong and it's survived kissing my foil mast.

The flex and durability is worth the (minor) extra weight. As a surf paddle, which is to around eye height, the weight has never bothered me. That said, I take my paddle outs are pretty relaxed since I started foiling cause the rides are sooooo long. I have a qb v drive for non-surf paddling.
As for blades, I used to have a wiki and had no complaints, but much prefer the longer/narrower kohini since swapping over.
Final tip, I have always wrapped the whole blade with a layer of nitto electrical tape. Stops a lot of chips and scraps, cheap and easily replaced. DJ has an installation video somewhere on SB.
Cheers for the input mate. I'm looking at the xtuf with possibly the mana 82 paddle or the wiki 84. It's great you can buy parts if you need them.
Maybe I need a few beers before I pull the trigger ha..

+ 2 for electrical tape 3 or 4 layers around the blade edge works nice and i dont notice the weight. need to change the top layer every year or so

You can always ask Lane at KeNalu if you are not sure what combination would work. He has always been very helpful.

Do you happen to have a email for him?
XTuff shafts are good I have the same one on both of mine.

Which blade do you prefer out of the wiki and the mana?

Hey Nugman
i use the Mana for long paddles a DW runs and the Wiki for surf. The Mana is very light and great when you are paddling over 10km. I used the Wiki for that first and it was great but heavier. The WIki is bullet proof and has a hard edge to protect against rocks etc so it preserves better and is not Carbon.
i like both but for different uses so buy one and save for the other.
Shoot me a PM if I can help with any Ke Nalu related questions.....or email us via the Aussie Ke Nalu website.
I'm the Aussie distributor.
I use the xtuf shaft with kenalu mana 82 blade. I've had this paddle almost two years and love it. It's super light weight and my shoulders definitely appreciate the small blade.
Nothing wrong with a Naish Carbon Plus. Very happy with mine . Over 120 sessions and still going strong besides wear and tear . Excellent flex
