While we're on the topic of new products.
I got one of these the other day.
Its totally waterproof (i fell in after a DWer and my phone is fine)
Its full function and lets me take my Iphone GPS paddling.
Was only $75 too.
Sick addition to a big night out to "beer-proof" your phone too.
Haven't used that stuff but we use a thick clear rail tape and it stands the test of time better than anything else i have seen!! and it's clear so you dont even notice it. That was painfull watching him put that on like that as well!!
Jacko
i just use clear rail tape, works beautifully and has saved alot of paint chips/dings whatever
Jarryd
im' with jacko.
that tape kinda ruins the look of board... doing that to the sup is like sticking automotive brands to you suped up subaru to make it look fully sick...
the clear stuff does the trick..
I put some on my DC about 6 months ago, the plain coloured version with no logos. It's very tough, doesn't mark or chop up the way the clear stuff does (sometimes I have to rest my board on old rough asphalt at my local and it's unmarked from that). It's also easy to put on and you can move it around a bit if you cock up the position. It's a bit pricey but I'm very happy with it and would buy it again.
I bought the Naish Rail tape at a highly inflated price (no reflection at all on the retailer) and I reckon that the Cloth gaffer tape I tried, lasted longer at an eigth of the price and was good for three applications. Fortuitously it's exactly the same colour as as my board. I'm not using anything anymore.
What's with all this Anal "I don't want to chip my board!" rubbish anyway? If your not chipping or dinging it, your not surfing it hard enough"![]()
My surfboards always looked used because they were.
SUP's appear to be like antique cars collect them and make sure they don't get scratched!
What absolute B------t!!!!!
Oh, I forgot resale value.
What are we turning into??![]()
Unless you're sponsored, a professional surfer or an avid competitor any more than three boards (SUP) isn't a quiver its an unhealthy waste of money.![]()

much better than boring clear tape imo
it has a belt loop in it.
i havent dropped it as yet.
and i dont really want to.
the camera and all over features work.
it dont take it so i can use the phone, i use the camera, GPS and music.
this thing rocks
Re rail tape:
go to Bunnings, into the paint section. Find all the tapes, like sticky, masking etc....find the stuff called "All Weather Tape" its about 2 inches wide and I think the rolls are 30m or so...about $15
I have used this on all my boards, it is very sticky, has never come off, clear, doesnt affect performance (for those sponserd types) and does a pretty good job of protecting the rails, yes it will get scuffed when clipped by the paddle, but so will anything.
I wouldnt think it quite as good as the 3M stuff, but at 1/10th the price (maybe even less) it is close to the performance
Hi Shire,
like Matt says put tape on your paddle and the problem is greatly lessened. I've just given up on tape completely. I find new places to chip all the time and in the end I'm not sure that tape doesn't affect the flow of water over the rail. Now when people comment on the chips I just tell them that I got that surfing Cathedral Rock at twenty foot on a full moon at midnight, or conversely when I hit a little kid that dropped in on me at Ocean Grove in 6 inch swill. It does stick like S--- to a blanket though so I just used to put it over the same spot and bugger the bumps. who is going to look that closely anyway?![]()

Crack Up!!!
First stock board I had was a Bonga, wacked the black cloth gaffa tape down both rails and it looked way cool. When I took the tape off all the white paint underneath came away with it, way uncool. Second board was the Uberfish and on the advice of those who should have known better, went to the hardware store and bought a roll of this white grip tape that is used for traction on the bottom of baths and showers. Stuff was textured like sandpaper and cut the crap out of you every time you came off, actually wore holes in the paddle!!!
Dont use tape anymore, have learned to embrace the rail chip.
Cheers
