The best IMO are the bum-bag inflatable type but they prevent you using a bum-bag water bottle holder (like the one i often use) and it's not obvious from a distance that you're wearing a PFD if the law requires it.. Also these inflatable types can fail and be hard to put on in a panic situation.. So.. In some ways the normal PFD's are better.. I have one of each and if it's wild or risky I use the normal type.. If its safe and only a requiment I use the inflatable type.. If you read my post 'Downwind drama's you will see how my normal type PFD probably saved my life.. The normal type PFD's that we choose to wear is the Ultra Pinicle be because it seems to fit best and is good quality and it also has a pocket in the back for a drink bladder.. and they're reasonably priced.
