This year at the NSW SUP titles was the hardest year yet, we had the usual suspects absolutely tearing apart anything that moved and with 3 days of solid and consistent swell and light winds made for some epic conditions for the competition.
I usually just take a few photos but they just get lost on a hard drive somewhere never to see the light of day, but this year I thought I would take some video & make a little edit.
Well with the waves turning on, a crazy mist in the mornings and guys like Kai Bates, Harry Maskell, Justin Holland & James Casey all vying for the title, it made for some epic surfing. I didn't make it as far as I would have hoped this year but with the addition of the 10ft contest I nearly made the finals....down to the last wave and missed the cut by a fraction of a point (it was a great end to the heat, full of suspense)
I finally got around to making a little edit which is part 1 - there is a heap more footage that didn't fit into just one song so I will make another edit in the next week.
Harry & Kai went toe to toe and as usual absolutely blew my mind. I love being able to compete against these guys and see what is really possible in SUP surfing first hand.
Enjoy
Looks like everyone was shredding. Was this all contest footage or was it free surfs too?
All contest surfing. I would love to film some free surf expression session as they would be going bigger and harder.
I have a heap more footage that didn't fit into 1 song so will make a part 2 soon.
Thanks for the great video Slatz!
I would personally really like also a "raw" video of just the full rides, and also going back up up to the peak, going through foam walls, etc... not music nor fancy edits, but an educational vid to look at all the modern SUP techniques by experts...
Cool. We're they all on production boards?
There was a mixture - Harry & Justin were on customs boards, Kai & James had boards that looked like production boards but they may have been made in a custom size. I didn't ask them. There were a lot of customs getting ridden by the rest of the crew too

You read my mind colas.
I have filmed a heap of footage for more instructional type videos this year. Just struggling to find the time to edit and post. Some cool stuff coming though.
Nice, what town/beach was it?
It was at One Mile Beach up at Nelson's Bay on NSW mid North coast. The best conditions I've ever had for a contest - 3 days of light winds and solid swell.
Just epic, all rippers, Harrys style reminiscent of Poenaiki, so dynamic with a snappy but still flowing cut back, if that makes sense. Kai very polished and multidimensional. Echo the thinking that some raw footage would be good, interested in the paddle out, are they proning it out through the break, that sort of thing.
What was the swell direction to get one mile going?
Not sure of swell direction, but Birubi was pumping as well

Yeah Harry was ripping, they all were.
There was really no prone paddling back out, or at least very minimal. They had no problem standing on their boards and there were several paddle battles which was cool to watch.
I'll have to look back through the footage. Not sure I filmed paddle outs
Thanks for shooting the vid Slatz... I never get tired of watching SUP surf videos at all levels.
Watching the good guys is fun and always a learning experience.
