Hi all,
Im heading to Bali with my Sunova Speeed 8'10 in February - flights booked (the board fits the hold according to Jetstar) and now looking at where to stay!
I have never been to Bali before, so am researching where to stay that could offer easy access (walking?) to some breaks and a nice resort style hotel to stay in.
Any advice please sugh as locations/hotels, how best to get around with a board (presume car hire?), and any other tips for a first-timer to Bali ??
Thanks,
Richard
In February your best bet is to stay on the east coast nusa dua or Sanur, the trade winds should still be offshore ..
plenty of reefs to get out to to get a wave any fisherman with a boat will take you out for $5 or 5000 rup there is surf school in Sanur that organizes boats but you can also paddle out to the reef ... waves range from fun sup waves to heavy reefs lot of rights ..
the other side from uluawtu to Kuta reef is left reefs except airport rights .. the bukit peninsula is tough on a sup plenty of crowds but if you find a quiet spot it's well with a paddle .
The airport reefs are great get a boat from Kuta out to Kuta reef middles and airport lefts it's a huge reef and you can paddle it and find a wave it does get busy and can Handle plenty of swell ..
then you have the beaches from Kuta legian and seminyak all fun beachies plenty of waves super fun few crowds but always get a wave usually high tide the banks are best nothing bigger than 3 foot if bigger only a few places handle it and will be packed .. further up you have chunguu (sorry bout the spelling !!! ) chunguu is now super busy but lots of waves plenty of wankers with man buns and beards but if you look you can fine some epic waves in the area...
I take sups there usually 2 one for the beaches sunova flow 8,7and a reef point break board sunova acid 8'10 take spare paddle and fins and leggies as you will snap and loose them and it's hard to replace over there. Lastly be courteous and learn a few local words as the locals rip and if your doing the wrong thing you will get sent in or won't get a wave most of all have respect and have fun it's a rad place ????????

You need a driver look up made pronounced marday he will pick you up unreal guy and great driver he can take you to surf spots too he knows them all message him though Facebook he will wait at the airport for you.. accommodation is really upto how much you want to spend we stay at jayakarta resort legian with kids and wife super cheap easy on the beach good waves out front .. or we stay in a villa in Bingan that a friend owns but there are resorts everywhere it all comes down to budget and family status????

Sanur is fun.
heaps of different reef breaks, and tons of resorts and things to do.
the breaks are easy to access by paddling across the flat water inside the reef. The paddle out is actually a nice warm up.
fully agree that Sanur is great that time of the year
we have stayed there a couple of times and would recommend Villa Kembali
the hotel rooms aren't that great but the villas with there own pools are fantastic particularly the three bedroom villa if there is a few of you
it is very close to the beach and the surf school that Jankie operates so you can organise a boat out to the reef although I agree with bowerboy it is a great easy warmup paddle
enjoy it
Jimbaran bay near the airport with Priority sup, you can paddle out to Torro Torro to warm up then move further across to airport rights.
Or take a longer board for a lap across the bay ,grab a drink and return .
My wife is into sup after this early morning 8km lap, brekki from market, surf, sun/sleep, sunset surf.
Jankie at Sanur is great.
Chungu is developing full on like slugga said. Changed a lot in a year.
So many places to go try away from prone crowd.
Learn some lingo / translate app, explore, enjoy.
plus 1 for Sanur in Feb. Lembongan can often work in Feb as well although is always a bit of a gamble but worth it if its working, especially Lacerations. I generally stay in the south portion of Sanur as is close to the breaks I enjoy, is also close to Serangan. Good resort style hotels in that area are Mercure Sanur and Prama at the lower mid end, Puri Santrian at the higher mid and Fairmont at the top end (these are all on the beach there are a few other options inland).

Oh and take a pair of tie downs straps long enough to go over the board and a full loop thru the car door openings, most of the drivers there will happily take SUP/boards in a bag (or on a towel) straight on their roof (some even have roof racks) but many won't have anything to tie it onto the roof with.
