Yeah me too. Having dislocated my shoulder last year hitting the sand, and then bruising my back bone/coccyx and struggling to walk for 4 weeks on a reef, I'm starting to wonder if there's something about shallow water wipe outs that these guys know that i don't

No there isn't, I used to body wamp that place in my youth before I knew any better, if you aren't wearing a wetsuit you are going to get a deep skin sand treatment. The only rule is to tuck your head under before getting pile driven into the sand so that the back of your shoulders take the hit, and not your neck.
The fun factor is marginal. The viewing factor is great.
