All the regulars made it through the heats yesterday. First wave of the first Jake blew the back put of the wave about 4 times and then finished with a little cover up.
The BOP was taken out by Ben Tardrew and a massive performance by Luke Jenkins to cross the line 2nd, followed by Cam McKay, Michelle England, Lach Simpson, Stimo and Gordon Mckercher had a sprint to the line.
On a personal note did better in the surfing than last year. Actually got more than one wave and didn't snap my leggie and actually managed to finish 3rd in my heat.
I was just checking out a few of my photo's, I only had a little point and shoot camera and the when the battery ran out after the first couple of heats I never did get around to recharging it but looking at the photo's it is hard to believe that this is the way the comp started out yesterday.
Mild conditions with a nice little peak you could go left or right on, wish I had some photo's of the last couple of heats today to do a comparison (someone may post some) but I can tell you it didn't look anything like this.
Wow, SUPs outnumbered the long boarders on entries! Sounded like a great weekend!
Well done to Scott McKercher, what a legend!
Denmark sounds like its going to be bigger - surf events and Tech Race.
Yeah we would of kept you all entertained for hours if we had to do the beach run and back out around the buoy.
How did you go in your heat on Sunday Rog? ![]()
What a craker of a weekend, a big congratulations to the winners, and a big thankyou to all who entered, the SUP numbers are growing rapidly and it is great to see so many new faces. A very special thanks to Galvo at the STANDUP SURF SHOP and Ian and STARBOARD for their continued support, you guys never fail to assist and it is really appreciated. I would also like to personally thank Justin and his team from Surfing WA who tirelessly run a great event, with the extra SUP entries it makes for a very long day on the beach. Thanks guys for embracing the SUPs and making us part of your events. I cant wait for Denmark for round 2.
Sounds like I went home at the right time then (running low on rum anyway)
Thanks again Stimo for giving your spot up for me in the open div.
I'd like to say a couple of thank you's as well.
Firstly the Surfing WA team who put on a fantastic weekend, I'm looking forward to the Denmark comp.
More importantly though to Ian and Gordon for reminding me when we got back from dinner and a couple of pints at Caves House,
that heading over for a couple of quiety's with Galvo and Rog could be dangerous with a 8am heat the next morning. ![]()
We do need more practice in the surf. There r some good places for proper bop races around mandurah and quite a few spots to the north aswell. Would be good to do a supwa bop race and surf sesh followed by bevereges every couple of months or so. I haven't done a proper bop race in wa yet:(
P.s. not having a dig at anyone, i love supwa and what they do for us. just trying to plant a seed;)
After swallowing half the lineup coming in I had a quick chat to a few guys on Saturday arvo and the seed has well and truely been planted. I hear you and Ben have found a good little spot down past the Cut which would be ideal???
Results etc are up on the Surfing Australia website.http://www.surfingaustralia.com/wa/news-details.php?id=3335
Having ridden a wave of popularity, across the globe, over the past decade, stand-up paddleboarding has etched its way firmly into the sphere of competitive and recreational surfing, solidifying itself as a permanent part of WA State level competition. The hybrid discipline, which takes inspiration from surfing, skiing, wakeboarding and skateboarding, continues to rapidly evolve and grow in popularity with a record number of competitors taking part in the event in a range of new divisions.
Former world wave sailing champion Scott McKercher (Margaret River) proved he has still got the skills as he ripped up the Open Men's SUP final. McKercher beat Rick Jakovich (Gracetown) by less than one point in an ultra close finish. 2012 State SUP Champion Jake Jakovich (Gracetown) finished third ahead of Phil Berry (Margaret River) in fourth.
"I'm blown away to be standing here ahead of some great competitors. I've been to a lot of big Windsurfing events over the years and it's great to know how good things are run here in WA." McKercher said.
In other SUP results, Tim Fraser (Margaret River) won the O/40 Men's SUP, Tim Calder (Dunsborough) won the O/50 Men's SUP, Amanda Griffiths (Cottesloe) won the Open Women's SUP, while Ben Tardrew (Osbourne Park) won the 'Battle of the Paddle' from Smith's to Yallingup in just over 17 minutes.
After a hugely successful start to the 2013 HIF State Longboard and SUP Titles, all eyes are now turned towards round two of competition which will head south to Denmark on the 4th - 5th May. The event is set to showcase the surf rich south coast with competitors hopeful the location serves up some quality surf. That is after winning the windsurfing comp in Margaret River the day before,
That is after socialising intensely with Galvo/ Rog & Co the night before
and this is on his dodgy knee
and on a board style he has not ridden before
and then winning against the outstanding skills of the Jakovich brothers and
in conditions that most poeple would not be able to sup in !
Yes, an outstanding effort that i doubt will be ever matched !
True Roger,
But he commented to me before our heat that he had not ridden the Carbon version of the 8 5" SB Pro - which i found interesting.
