Hi I'd like some advise on buying a board. I am new to boarding need some help in choosing board. I have good balance(but have only ridden a board twice) and could paddle with my children standing on it with me. I am looking to paddle mainly calm water, sometimes light waves(live in rockhampton so no surf to speak of), light enough to lift onto the roof rack myself(am fairly strong), am 58kg & 165cm. Looking for something stable but not a plank of wood. It doesnt need to be recent. I am looking at spending about $600/$700 as its my first board. Any ideas? i was thinking about a 10" board

9'8''-10'6'' should be ok for you adn your family. I suggest you to look for a used, cheap all rounder. Believe me or not, but after a couple of months, you'll probbably want to switch to something more advanced. In my opinion, smaller board will suit you much better as you are pretty light (lighter, easyer to carry, maneuvre - based on your size), but if you want to paddle with children on, slightly bigger board is still ok (10'). but look after width of a board witch is very important for stability.

and something under 13, 12kg. fanatic all wave, fly, starboard wp or some bic ace tec are ok for beginers (i think that they're all lighter than 13kg)

Hi Treen, I agree with the above, there are a lot of options in that 9'6 to 10'2 sort of range that would be fine.
If you haven't caught up with him already, Pat Eastwood at Cap Coast Learn to Surf does SUP sales, really nice guy and he is pretty handy on a stand up himself. He is on FB but I don't think he is on Seabreeze.

There are soft-top boards that are good for kids sitting on the nose, and you could consider an inflatable - I assume they are light (for getting on and off the roof) and good if you ever paddle around mangroves (its been a long time since I was in Rockhampton). The lightest solid boards are carbon, but they are more expensive and not as durable.

Thanks NEpaddle, i was thinking a bit smaller but thought conservative at first. But when i think about it id rather work hard with a shorter board for awhile than have to upgrade by christmas. thanks
