Help needed...

I would like to build a wood paddle board for surfing small waves (Below shoulder high beach breaks) and would like a recommendation for how short I should go at 77 kilo's. (Currently my shortest board is 10') I realize the pro's can get away with really short boards but I am asking for a regular joe, surfing average waves.

Thank-you!!

Hi, it depends if you already prone surfed shortboards.

If you have, you can go with a 6'6" - 7'0" board, as the take off on these boards have the same feel than a shortboard takeoff "pop", and the same placement on the wave.

If not, I would advise a 8'0" to 8'6" one first. Otherwise you will have too many things to re-learn at the same time.

Short boards are great for a wooden construction as the weight is not so important. If a 6'6" board is somewhat heavier than an epoxy one, it is not a real issue, unless you are a top competitor. Plus it should be easier to build :-)

PS: I would definitively advise a Simmons or "Tomo" shape, they make the transition to shorter length so much easier... and so much fun.
