I currently have a quatro 8'6 125lts and feels big when the waves are good, great board otherwise. I would like more performance. I am 85kg hoping to be closer to 80...we will see.
new board options are quatro carve 8' or the 8'4
8'4 is 120lts, I think to big for my 85kg and the 8'0 is 100lts sounds scary small...
the 8'4 could be a single board quiver, but I am worried it will still feel big when the waves are good.
With the 8'0, I could keep the 8'6 but again 100l could be too small...
thoughhts?
I've got the 8'4 Carve 120L carve - I bought it specifically cause I like the combo of shape size, and liked the bottom profile and volume (like a pumped up version of my short board). I also respect the fact that Keith Taboul is also one of the best Maui based shapers going around (particularly in windsurf terms)
I'm 88 kg's and its volume and shape provide a good platform for pretty windy choppy conditions and it surfs really well rail to rail and is certainly easy to generate speed with good stability/whitewater pop - haven't sussed it out fully (lack of surf lately) but I can tell you it has a sweet spot on the tail kick and has nearly blasted me off the back of a few small waves pushing too hard off the back foot on a bottom turn Its really light, but has a fairly wide tail which has taken a bit of adjusting too on initiating low speed cutbacks - may be a little better in quad mode for this (using KRF Luke Egan Medium Carbo tunes in it).
It depends on what you'll be surfing - a good solid day locally might be head to absolute max head a half on the peak so it will only ever be challenged size wise if I head west - but I'm not chasing it. If your surfing waves bigger than that regular then half ya luck
Certainly be more performance oriented than the old 8'6
Any way my 2 cents worth - happy board hunting
Thanks rush, have you tried the 8'?
Sounds like the 8'4 is pretty comfortable for your weight...
I do want the 8' but then I am worried it will be too small, never tried a 100l board...
Nah - buying the 8'4 was a leap of faith without a demo could gave gone horribly wrong - considered a deep custom JC model but went down the quatro path for my own reasons - had an 8' x 28 *board pro wave for a while and didnt enjoy the constant need to be paddling and lack of stability in windy lumpy conditions - its a one board solution for me that i can sup sail as well - my other previous board was an 8'9 PSH ripper
Shame Quatro didn't do a 110 litre. I had the same problem of working out what volume without a demo. I weighed 85kg max & now am 77kg min. At about 84kg I went down to a JP wide body 124L 8'2" & felt I could have gone easily lower in the lumpy conditions I surf at. But the JP is the best when it is lumpy & I am glad I didn't go smaller in that. Now I have got a Sunova Soul 8'3" 110L coming to me soon. Less width 29" to. There was a much cheaper different brand carbon board at 8ft long but the volume of 119L put me off so had to change brands. So maybe you might have to look at that. Plus nose width makes a big difference too for stand still stability. But might compromise surfing performance.
My opinion. Since you have the 8'6" why not the 8' 100L if you know that the conditions will suit. That is smooth & glassy or near enough & if you don't mind paddling around in circles in a bit, and I mean a bit of chop when you want to use the 8' in the performance waves. Helps with your better balance & fitness & will help you lose weight too! Haa!
Otherwise if you want a short board & want stand still balance, Then I would go 8ft 110 to 115L max remembering the greater width the better stand still balance. So you could compromise with less width more volume or more width less volume.
My 65 year old mate at 85 kilos & stocky build, height at about 5ft 6 or 8" rides a Coreban 7Ft Hyper 115 litres & has the same balance as me on my JP 8ft 124L Widebody.
Good luck with your choice.
