Gday guys ! Sorry for inundating you tonight just a little excited about the new board . What I am after is any tips in the waves I should be looking out for .My 11 ft was super forgiving I could drop in very late and take the falls and still surf out but it was hard in that it was super slow along the wave once in . I think my question is where to sit on the wave to catch it and once on do I stamp right back or ride in the middle like my old girl . Any tips suggestions would be greatly appreciated I have ridden a 9'2 mini mal for a few years but supping is different cheers K
Hey krist..like all new boards it will take a few surfs to get use to it ..but a 9.5 ..you can go where ever you want ..
totally different riding to a 11' I have both too ..
enjoy ..you'll love the looseness ..and throw around feel.
Krist.... never apologize for stoke!
I don't know what 11 footer you had.... but I am assuming it was a tanker, from your comment on slowness.
The new Allwave 9'5 is going to "yaw" back and forth more than your tanker, so you need to consider that when paddling for a wave.
The smaller, lighter board will react to much less weight shift than the big board.
If you paddle into a wave in classic "parallel stance", then you should be fine right around the handle
If you use a surf stance:
Back foot slightly behind the handle
Front foot slightly in front of the handle
Very easy to put more weight on the front foot, when paddling into a wave
then shift your weight slightly to the back foot, as you drop down the face.
Your going to love how much faster it releases into the wave, and how much quicker it turns.
Have fun!
I have one, very versatile, just spent a half an hour paddling down the river, little bit of a surf then back home. 5kms
, just a great board for my 87kgs.
Thanks STP allways great to get some feed back from you as I am a keen follower of your YouTube site . I nearly bought the speed after watching how much fun you have on it , must have watched it 20 times
I have had the board out 3 days now in the worst conditions and had the most fun
so I can only imagine I will be on cloud nine in some clean waves . Thanks again and keep those vids coming
Gday Darryn , been very choppy up this way for a few days but I am suprised about the glide not as good as the 11 footer but not bad at all . I can paddle around for 2 or 3 hours and still come home and do the dishes
STP the biggest issue seems to be placement on the wave for take off , I can't just paddle from way out anymore and when I do get to close to the pocket I am nose diving , oh well lots move fun to be had getting it right !

Not sure what STP's trick to stop the nose diving but mine is when I dig the paddle in just before I take off on the wave I put all my weight on the paddle and move from paddling to surfing stance in one move, kind of like popping up in the right spot on a prone board. Its easier with the sup because all my weight is on the paddle. If the waves are really steep I use the move a couple of strokes before the critical one to get into surfing stance but stay forward to keep the trim right then as I take off use the last paddle stroke to jump back to trim the board for the drop down the wave face.
.
Hooking in to your bottom turn as quick as possible also helps with the nose diving and stops you getting miles out in front of the wave.
It just takes time to get use to your board and it's sweet spots for differing conditions
I keep in normal paddling stance to get onto full waves and as soon as I start to semi plane I jump into surf stance.
On steeper waves as soon as I feel certain amount of lift from the wave, I jump into surf stance.
It's all about timing and feel...
I find small waves harder to time than medium sized ones....and generally I take off on small waves heading down the line more to avoid the nose diving..
You could be spot on crakas , the waves I have caught have been the bigger of the sets and yes it's all about practice right , don't think I would love this sport as much if it was all easy
As crakas said, angle a bit on takeoff, so your nose isn't heading straight down at the steepest part.
Interesting.....I usually head straight down the steep part ..then turn either half way up or bottom hand turn ..
my board has heaps of rocker ..( Hokua)so takes a bit to get going ..but always find myself in the pocket .
i guess ever wave is different ..surfing the Nalu ..yes it can point across the wave ..and doesn't like big drops.
does the all wave have much rocker.? Sounds like the mana ..to steep and you nose dive.
sounds like your enjoying the short board krist .
Loving it thanks Tardy , it's a pretty subtle rocker on the allwave nothing like the hokua which I had a paddle on from the local shop 9'6 148 ltrs if I remember correctly heaps of rocker . Day 4 I think the real problem is I just love talking about SUP
Good one ..mines the 9,6 @170 .good for big lumps like me .move the rear fin foward and back .forward for loose.i dont have it up there much ..to much tail sliding .yeeha.![]()
I felt like a young man this arvo
this allwave is amazing I was carving it up this afternoon at Alex heads ( in my eyes ) but in all seriousness I have only ever surf a prone at 9'2 and this 9'5 allwave can be thrown around like the guys on short boards , I put the fin right back today and it helped with my takeoffs . That's session number 4 and I allready feel like I could step down in size
super stoked !
Nice one Krist. You are getting me pumped to get out on mine in the surf, I have the 8'5 allwave. When I do (maybe next week) I will be using the tips you have been given here.
Good stuff Whassup ! I am not kidding here
I have wear marks on my wrists from the rail tape paddling back out through the surf I just can't get enough . I also surfed a different wave today ( not shore break ) and the fin didn't feel right being all the way back ?
