Hi guys,
I'm new in this forum and I'm not native English speaker so excuse me if my English is not perfect.
I'm willing to purchase a SUP and I came with 2 models:
Fanatic Allwave 8'9 2016
Starboard Wide Point 8'10 2016
I'm 1.93cm height, 82kg.
I'm not new in this world, used to paddle with my friend's SUP and do it really good.
I'm looking for a board which will be relatively fast cruiser but will be able to catch waves well.
The ocean here is choppy sometimes, waves are fast and 40-50cm top in average. Of course the we got some pretty good days of high waves here in the summer. Winter conditions - 80cm waves minimum.
I'm new to surf, and willing to learn. I do learn really fast that's why i think about those dimensions so i won't need to purchase a new SUP soon.
What do you think?
Thank you all.
Have a great weekend ![]()
Welcome to the forum......haven't surfed either of those boards so am not much help.....but am sure lots of people will be happy to give their opinions
But you are not very big or heavy......maybe as the two boards are of a similar length......you could consider the board which has the least volume. This could indicate it has thinner rails and a more refined shape making it better for surfing rather than just "floating"
I have had my starboard wide point 8 foot 10 for over six years it is a wonderful board very stable and able to be thrown about but i am 95 to 100 kg...board quality is very good only a few minor paddle strikes on rails..i have ridden the allwave also and its nice board too very easy to move about on the wave..i have quad set up in my starboard and is very fast down the line of the wave..you cant go wrong with either board in my opinion..i like my wide point so much i will probably get new model soon either the 2015 or 2016 model..
I think either of these boards would be good for you in the waves but I wouldn't rate either as a "relatively fast cruiser". Maybe the 10'5" Starboard Drive or 10'6" Fanatic Fly would do that job better.
GizzieNZ - Thanks mate. the diffrence is only 5 liters..
Toomanyboards - Thanks.
I really consider the Wide Point because of the price diffrences. There is a price diffrence of 350USD b etween them, the Wide point is cheaper. But, i don't know about the build quality diffrence between the Allwave standard edition(not pure) to the starshoot editin, do you have any clue? Recommendations?
Can you please tell me more about the cruising ability? His speed?
PTWoody - Thanks.
The boards you have mentiond are not good surf boards as the boards i'm interested with. do you recommend taking a bigger size? Maybe 9'4 9'5?
Hello Maor404
The build quality between both the widepoint and allwave would be the same in my opinion. If the starboard is cheaper by 350 USD i would go with the starboard widepoint..
Cruising ability both would be similar they are not boards for doing long flat water paddles on but are more than capable for odd flat water paddle..speed on the wave and paddling for the wave is very good on the starboard i find the width very good for keeping the board straight as you paddle for the wave which is very important for surfing and keeping the board straight allows more speed in my opinion..i would stay with the 8 foot 10 inch widepoint for your weight and not go longer...cheers

You pretty much sum it all up, but i got another deal which is a little bit cheaper and it's another Cobra Brand board.
What do you think about the JP Surf Wide Body WE 2015 8'8 31"? Or the 9'3 32"?
Sellers in the stores always get me confused, and i do not believe them.
Thanks.
I have not rode any JP boards yet but they look very nice and seem to be popular all down the coast of OZ...All three branded boards are good quality in my opinion and you wont go wrong with either..if you choose the JP go the 8'8 31...are you sure its 31 inch they sell here as 32 inch wide i think in australia..
Good Luck mate
Toomanyboards thanks.
Well, here the the sizes 7'4 8'2 8'8 are 31". Only the size 9'3 is 32".
That's all the sizes available in stock now.
The board is 2015.
Has anyone ever tried this board?
Yep i had the 8'2×32 jp widebody in the older model was a great board super stable really high quality construction just tape the rails as the paint on there chips fairly easily. The newer models look even better taking them down to 31" and narrowing the nose and tail looks like it would make them ride better especially when it gets bigger. If you were going gor 100% surf id say get the 8'2. The 8'8 should paddle flatwater ok and surf really good the 9'2 would padfle faster but loose quite a bit of menouverability in the surf.
I,m 188x90-92kg and paddled the JP 9.3 widebody, the Allwave8.10 and owned 2 widepoints8.10 and like mentioned before you really can,t go wrong on either of them.
The Fanatic felt the most friendly and easy of the 3,but also imo the slowest to turn. The JP is longer and feels like that. To me it made more surfing in a bit of lazy longboardstyle, but could made some good turns for it size as well.Fittings of the JP are imo the best (pro construction).
WP8.10: well I owned 2 of them so obviously I like them and especially as a quad. They are the turniest of the 3 and surf pretty good in anything from knee high till up to 3-4m if the wave isnt too steep.
I changed the WP8.10 for an Airborne8.8 and although I really really like my AB and it excels in slower waves to max head high its rather weak in faster and bigger ones where the WP is still usable.
Like written before, you can,t go wrong on any of them, but although the specs look similar they have all 3 a different character. My advice would to really think about how you realistically surf and what fit your conditions best. Based on that decide what to buy because the pricedifference you are forgotten the month after.
tip: Try to be realistic because its also very tempting to buy a board based on what you hope for instead of what you get (I did that sand my small board, a starboard 8.5 Pro carbon, is collecting dust in the back of the garage
because we haven't that much the conditions it needs to shine combined with a very little chop to allow me to stand on it making it basicly an (very expensive)holiday board).
Thank you guys for your great posts! Really appreciate it.
Jeroensurf, i understand what you say about being as realistic as possible. Our conditions here are usually fast beach brakes or fast and short waves up to 1 meter.
In the summer we have some pretty good days and the winter, well the winter is perfect for surfing.
This is why i think about the JP surf wide body we 2015 8'8, as a fish shape ia more suitable for my need imo. It's turn faster then the 9'3 and can really give me the chance to catch more waves.
But the paddling, we do have flat water some days around the year in the ocean and i just want to know if the board is too slow? Should i think about the 9'3 or fusion?
Tomorrow I'll probably purchase it so your opinion guys are really important for me.
Thanks!
The JP Widebody can be a hit, and so is the WP.
I wouldnt go for the Fanatic because its imo a more relaxed cruising board that works very well on slow peeling waves as on fast beachies.
On flatwater the difference won,t be big between any of these boards because they are too short and too wide to go fast.
If you want speed you need a raceboard...that you can,t surf (for long) on your type of waves.
If you like to padle the flats I would serious considder to buy later an racer/tourer/14ft inflatable as well.
It will (at least for me), never an replacement for proper waves, but its WAY more fun as the gym and an very good work out + I really like the exploring part.
From the water your world can look completely different. :)
