Keeping in mind I weigh about 70-72kg I'm new to SUP but have a surfing and windsurfing background.
My first paddle on the board was up a river mouth in calm water, the board was very stable for me. I have nothing to compare it to but to keep the board straight while paddling I would generally do two paddle stokes on each side, some times three but any more and I'd be getting off course.(maybe due to my first time paddling skills also)
The surf was a very small 0.5 to 1ft clean conditions. Once out in it I felt a little unbalanced at times but just bent the knees or got down on my knees when paddling through the breakers, I got used of it and after a little while I felt relaxed with the stability. The board catches waves fairly well however you still have to get used of the timing and wait until the wave jack's up a bit on a reef or sand bar.
On the wave the board turned well however the waves didn't have a lot of power and were small. There was only so much I could do so I'd just catch a wave then ride along it and do a slow cut back or bog the tail and do a stall turn then a slow motion floater at the end if I was lucky. I found it a lot of fun and really enjoyed it as the board cruises along gutless waves really well, it still has a bit of width in the tail which makes it a bit different and slower to turn than my Mal and short boards however compared to the bigger SUP boards it probably turns a lot easier but I haven't ridden any so I can't compare.
I gave my friend a shot on the pocket rocket, he was about 85kg and hadn't been out in the water for a long time, he struggled trying to stand up paddle on it so I'd say if your around that weight you would want to be experienced or have very good balance to hop on a pocket rocket because you could see the board sink into the water a bit more when he was standing on it, kneeling on it he was fine.
The only bad thing about the board is the crappy fins you get with it and no fcs plugs for them to fit into, just the basic screw through the epoxy and into the cut out.
I'm very happy with the board and stand up paddling is extremely great fun!!! my favorite part was just cruising up the river with the tide going out to the mouth of the river then when the tide came in I used it to float back![]()
Hope this helps anyone considering the Pocket Rocket I will add more when I get some better waves on it.
