First time poster and looking at getting a 2nd hand board. I've been reading heaps of reviews and tried a few boards. I have surfed a little in the past ( got a 7' mini mal) but tried a few SUPS and Im hooked.
All the sup boards I have tried between 10-11' had not problem with stability.
I also tried a Starboard converse and again not problem staying upright. Will be using it for 70% flat water and the rest SMALL waves.
So any thoughts if the Hero? Would it be ok to jump straight into??
Im 5'7" and about 67kg.
Appreciate your thoughts.
To be honest, I think the Hero is a bit wide for your 70% flat water paddling. I think you'd be better off with a little more length and less width. From the Starboard range, the 9'5" x30" Converse, the 9'8" x30" Element or the 10'5" x30" Drive would be a better fit in my opinion.
The hero far too big for you......at your weight ....the pocket rocket would be a good intro board

My wife who is about your height and weight has a 9'8" x 30" Element and it works well for her, I would advise getting the carbon as it is easier to carry and manage.

Star board hero was my first board it is a great all round small wave cruiser I use mine now just for fishing of it is a good board to have lying in shed for small days or let someone else learn on

Unfortunately you will struggle to find this board on the second hand market for 2 reasons; it is over 30" wide and it is a Starboard. 98% of the boards on the second hand market are under 30" wide and the reason for them being on the second hand market is generally because people can't stand on them. Your best bet is to try as many as possible and then when you know you have the right board make the investment.
I've had a Hero for over a year now. I mainly got it because it has an attachment point for a windsurfing rig for teaching kids.
But once the wife had a paddle on it she really liked it and the 33" width means anyone can have fun on it. I don't bother with it in the surf anymore as it's too wide but on the flat stuff I still enjoy paddling it.
The only negative is that it's bloody heavy. If you're lifting it onto roof racks on your own it's quite an effort.
the main reason I sold my hero was I took off on a biggish wave and instead of the board being narrow enough to squish along the wave it squished me and stressed/tore thigh muscles.....narrow is good :)
