Hi all! Im 182cms 80-82kgs (Roughly 6' 180lbs I think)
I'm looking for a waveboard smaller than the Nah Skwell 9'6 which is fun, but requires a lot of stepping to get the most out of it. Tried a Naish Hokua 9'3 which was great in large, clean waves but I'm on the west coast of Sweden so the waves are weak. No groundswell. Just a little bit more nose would be nice and maybe a faster rockerline to catch the knee high stuff too.
It's always windy when there are waves, the wave periods here are generally short (4 seconds or less) and waves are often mushy rather than clean. I was considering the Pocket Rocket but I'm afraid that in the wind and small waves (sometimes knee/thigh high I'll suffer too much on the PR. I've been told elsewhere that the 8'10 is too thick in the rails to really suit my 82kgs and to go for the Converse instead, but at the same time I've been recommended a Whopper if I want a one board solution. If a Whopper or Hero would be good, why not the WP 8'10? Different rail configuration or what? I have a Naish Catalina for cruising so this is for waves only. When it gets head high I'll typically switch to windsurfing.

I'd really like to keep the board around 9'. 9'6 is at the limit of what fits OK in my car. Quad setup is a plus, since I surf beach breaks commonly, or at least a trifin that works well with larger thrusters and a small center fin. Two boards...well, maybe later.

Any input much appreciated, since I can't demo.
There's a Converse technora I've been eyeing. Or a WP 8'10 in Silver or even brushed carbon...

Go for the 8.10 x 32 in brushed carbon...very stable, great volume for weak waves, short in length for its volume..so very good board to surf...and has quads or thruster fins..easy to fit in your car...and so light to carry..I have one of these,my weight is 80kgs...nick name for this board is ..2 easy....you can do it all with this board..just think..sloppy waves, very stable ...its a WINNER.

Sounds good. I've heard from others that it's hard to really bury the rails enough at 80kgs, making it harder to turn tightly. No such trouble? I'll probably be using it in no more than 6' waves, more often 1-3'
Do you find the startouch slippery?

It's ridiculously expensive though, at 1800 euros... I can get the Technora Converse for 1100 and then a WidePoint 8'0 next year. Drool...

Yes,I find it is slippery..but..rubber bootees or a can of Magic Traction spray will get over that and NO..not hard to turn at all..that board is WIDE and FAT in the middle, but both ends are really pulled in..so get to the tail a little more and wammo...2 EASY.....

How does the WP 8' 10" paddle in flat water?

Personally I hated the 8.10 - too wide - too corky - too hard to get any rail hold when you need it cos its just way too fat a board unless you are maybe 90kg plus. I surfed the board in fairly sucky and shallow and unforgiving shoulder high waves and the board was a handful and did its best too kill me by not holding on the face. The converse however is a much friendlier board - paddles better - way faster on the wave - less corky - just as stable - better rail to rail and holds in on a steeper face much better.
The 9'1 pro is way better than both tho IMO

Hmm. The Technora Converse does sound like a better deal. Thing is - I'll just use this board in small waves, and it's never very steep. Sigh. Faster on the wave sounds good though...

I guess if I go for the Converse I can get a 2009 wood Pocket Rocket too for almost the same money. Slightly different boards...
I think I could fit both in the car, so maybe better to let the wallet decide.

Or just wait for the 2012 WP 8'2.

By the way - this forum rocks!
Thanks for current and future replies! It does help (and confuse me more).

If you want a short fat board, another one to look at is the new Fanatics. I had a quick paddleon the 8'10" Allwave today, similar specs to the the WP 8' 10" but the rails looked a little thinner. I was out in flat / choppy water, found the the board quite stable with my 90kg.

I actually looked at that yesterday. Not a bad idea. Also waiting for a price on an Angulo Surfa 9'. Light, wide, thinnish rails from the looks, quad setup possible. It ticks all the boxes. I guess I'd have to add a pad but so be it.

considering what was asked by sup swede your words are on the money & I agree on all points & swapping fin setups adds fun & a quiver in just one board..
perfect mix for what was asked ..

When faces are steep and over shoulder high it means it's blowing 25 knots and I'll probably be windsurfing. I'm looking at 1-3 foot waves mostly, often weak (i.e.) not jacking up steep but you need to paddle quite hard to catch the wave and super choppy due to all the wind. Paddle speed pushes me towards the Converse, stability in wind - 8'10.

After readin the comments here and on other forums I think most people who like the 8'10 and weigh 80kgs surf bad waves a lot of the time. Those who get better surf and bigger waves seem to prefer something more narrow.
The Pro models are just not optimized for my conditions. The Surfa has slightly thinner rails and 10 litres less volume. Way cheaper than the carbon SB and almost as light...
We shall see...

Going for the Angulo Surfa 9'0. Slightly thinner rails and a little bit more nose area than the Starboard widepoint. I'll be back with a report.
Thanx for all the input!

just saw the brochure for 2012 the new 8'2 wide point looks good around 130lt and the pocket rocket has changed shape with no stinger, no swallow tail and a thruster set up

Like I said I ended up getting a really good deal on a 9' Angulo Surfa. Planning on getting a PR or a 8'2 WP to complement it. I'd like another board for the kids anyway...
Not happy to hear about the new PR though. Better find a 2011 then. I like the quad setup for small mush and shallow breaks. Although I guess it could be setup as a true tri, large fronts and small centre fin...
