Anyone have experience with these 2 boards?
I'm wondering how they compare in terms of stability and speed. Starboard's web site shows that the All Star 14x23 has a stability rating of 3 and a speed rating of 10, while the Sprint 14x23 has a stability rating of 5 (lot higher than 3!) and a speed rating 10++.
Is the 14x23 Sprint that much more stable and faster than the 14x23 All Star?
Will depend on the conditions you are paddling in.
The Sprint will be the quicker board on the flat water. If you are in open waters the all star will deal with chop and has more rocker for catching runners.
Being both 23'', the Sprint has a lot more stability thanks to its huge recesed deck that place your feet under water level. The Sprint is also faster on flat water, light to medium downwinds and going upwind. The AllStar is a more simple/confortable shape that's easier to move your feet on and it's a better board for riding waves (i.e.: beach races), doing kick turns and driving your board on big downwinds. Plus, its THICK and wide tail pushes you really easy into the bumps.
I'd say you need to go 25'' on the AllStar to get the stability of the Sprint 23''.

I'm curious as to how or why this happens?
Argosi,
I have only tried the 2015 Sprint 14x23.. (not the Allstar 14x23). With my brief experience (1.5hr) on the Sprint if felt similar in stability when compared to the 2013 Starboard 14x25 ... I weight 150lbs/68kg ...5'10. With the GPS i did notice how the Sprint in the glass flat conditions was very fast and with the nose cutting through and creating very little spray... more like a trickle of water flow over the side of the bow.
I got to witness the 2015 Starboard 14x25 Race Carbon in action when i was on the 2013Ace 14x25 and was very impressed to see how effortlessly it glided in the flat conditions when having a 150m side by side "unofficial race". The Race's bow seemed to behave very much like the Sprint, where a light flow of water just passed to the sides of the bow, even when paddling at max speed. The Race seemed effortlessly fast.
Thanks. I have a 14x25 All Star 2013 model and find it plenty stable for me. If the 14x23 Sprint is about as stable as a 14x25 All Star, that would be great.
We don't get much pure flatwater around here. There's usually 5-15mph of wind and small wind chop on our big lake. Would the 14x23 Sprint be faster than the 14x23 All Star in those conditions?

When you're referring to the 2013 Starboard 14x25 - do you mean the All Star or the Ace? Thanks.
I think the Race http://star-board-sup.com/2015/overview-race/
Nice blend between the fast Sprint front and more comfortable Allstar back with an inbetween rocker.
Just bought a Race from owning a 2013 Sprint, highly recommend it! speed is competitive on the flat, but stable when it gets rougher.
Argosi, When i referred to the 2013 Starboard 14x25, this was the Ace. As mentioned by Jeroen, the Starboard Race 14x25 should be on your radar as well as this board is designed for flat and chop. From what I have seen of the Race it is very fast in the flat conditions, would be good to see how it handles the choppy conditions. Hopefully I will be able to try out the Starboard Race 14x25 in the near future.
Thanks for the comments. I was toying the idea of going with a 23" wide board, but decided to stick to 25". I ordered a 14x25 All Star. Should be here soon.
