I am riding the Starboard 2013 9 ft 5" Carbon Wide Point at the moment and just ready for a drop down in size. Weigh in at 85kg and ONLY ride waves been suping since last October.

Still need a bit of volume and width so didn't want to go too small too soon and would rather ride a slightly smaller board for 6 months and get used to it before taking the plunge into an out and out wave board.

Narrowed it down to 2 boards :

Starboard 8 10 WP or the JP Surf WB

Starboard 8, 10 WP
Demoed the Starboard 8 ft 10 in the cheap construction yesterday in strong winds and crap waves but seemed to catch waves much easier than my 9,5 which was a shock and was a lot looser on the wave faces, no probs with stability despite the horrid chop. Nose rocker worked well and kept well clear of the mush that was about yesterday.

WP 8,8 Wide Surf
Not ridden the JP Wide Surf 8 ft 8" so wanted some collective opinions on comparing the two boards, I saw one out on the water at Cott the other day and the board looked to be sitting low in the water and looked like it didn't have much nose rocker at all ???. The shape looks nice on the JP with the wide point pulled back so not too much foot work to be done after take off.

Construction
Another worrying thing is the JP chipping paint on the carbon version, paying $2000 plus for a board and the paint chipping off would really piss me off especially for resale value in 6 months, is this an issue.

And generally how do the SB and JP match up for weight and general durability, my SB carbon has taking a good beating in the past 8 months but still looks new.

Can anyone comment on stability between the two boards ?

Whats Around the Corner
Is there any news on Naish carbon 2014's, new Starby bigger Airborn ??????

its a bloody nightmare buying boards any help gratefully accepted..

Hi phil

If you can ride the 8 10 in such bad conditions maybe you should you should try and get a demo on something smaller.
I had the SB 8 10 wp, great board. Now i have the SB 8 2 wp carbon, 10 times better again . I've got more then 10kg on you and stability is not a problem, on the WP.

Cheers colin

Hi Rossall I have the 9'5 WP and have 10+kg on you i demoed the JP 9'2x30 surf and found the stability close to the WP
I want to demo the JP 8'8WB as well to compare, but at your weight don't think you have to stick to 32" wide you could even look at the JP 8'10x30 Surf. Just a thought

Howdy,

I have a JP 8 8 Surf Wide body.

Love it, super board in all sorts of stuff and I am not much of a surfer!

I demoed the 8 2 and found it to be just as good, no problems floating me and stable to boot. It was a real revelation, look up the Epiffany topic I started here.

You can also see the 8 8 review I put up.

Depending on ability, I would go the 8 2 as the only reason I went 8 8 is that I am learning and not quite ready for the super short step.

Many thanks Momasfolly, I see from your report that you have applied rail saver but have you had any other problems with the paint chipping off or any other cosmetic problems

How do you find the nose rocker in surf ???

Hi Phil

All due respect to other posters but keep in mind that a lot of posters on here are from the Eastern states and dont have to deal with choppy onshore conditions day after day!

I have the 9.5 WP and the 9.2 Jp Surf and can tell you that though they might feel equally stable on flat water there ia a huge difference in stability as soon as there is chop. The JP surf is not that stable a board but is by fsr the best surf sup I have had due to its surfability.

I also bought a JP 8.8 wide body wood to replace the 9.5 for the really rough, days and only have used it twice so cannot comment at this stage,.

I have tried the 8.10 Sb WP but found it to corky although it was the initial model and apparently they have changed somewhat.

Im 96kg and 6'4.

hope this helps a little.

My comparison with stability was in surf not flat water, Took a demo JP 9'2 to Scott's Head for 3 day and was surprized at how easy to go from a 32" to 30" wide board and I don't have the best balance.
With all the backwash off the rocks didn't fall all that much but being 96kg 6'2 my comparison to 85kg + height would be different.
Just my honest opinion

Good Luck...you'll enjoy what ever you buy.

You guys are all that tall and skinny you should be riding 7'6" x27.5 Hokuas!!!!!!!! Seriously though from what I've heard and what you say, the 8'10" x 30 JP surf is it?? Should be be fine! If you want stability try the 8'6" Allwave, They surf like a fish apparently. The 8'8" JP Wide body probably your ideal board. The 9'5" widepoint is a great board so you know the 8'10" will be good. Don't be too precious about construction!!! How does it affect your surfing??? I've surfed for 47 years off and on, (mostly falling off now that is.) They are for surfing not for show. If they aren't banged up then you're not really having a go/having fun! As for resale value, there are so many second hand boards for sale it doesn't matter. I've got into the habit of giving them away to interested friends and family on the proviso I can use them if I need to. You can only surf one board at the time. Have Fun, smile a lot! As TeaTrea says the best surfer is the one with the biggest smile not neatest, unscratched board!!! By the way the Fanatics (Allwaves) are made by Tonka-(not really)virtually unbreakable!! Hey Lou have you ever been to the East Coast? Summer = SE chop day after day , after day................................after day,...........................after day!

Hi Lou good to hear from you, my backs getting stronger(98%), mouth's getting bigger, hip sockets disappearing (as are my braincells!!!). Sorry didn't make the connection earlier. I hate fins now!!!! Every time I buy a set online I always get the wrong type. I make sure that I go into the shop and physically check now. Yeah, we know about chop in Victoria during summer, and I suppose we are technically South East. Take care big fella

I'm sure WSS has a 8'8WB demo might try and have a go on that as well.

Nose rocker is fine in waves. Been out n up to solid 6 foot.
The orange paint is fine, lost a couple of bits of black. But had it out for dozen surfs or so. Other than that it is taying pretty true and no real damage anywhere.
Will soon post a vid in 2 foot clean stuff. Just love the thing. Very happy, no regrets. I'm a fan.

Hey Rossall,

There's a new 8'2 Starbie around the corner that will be like a blownup airborn.
Wait for the news, as the board looks insane!!!

Hi Rossall,
Chop, Slop, Clean, Glass.
On shore, off shore. Small, medium large.
Beach, reef,

The JP has come through on all. Just can't help but say it is a huge success for me. Inserted a 5th plug and ride the 8 8 as a thruster. Works.

Thanks JP.

Take it out in anything, I do.
