Hi!
I'm new to SUP but love it.
I'm looking to get a SUP and am confused by all this volume talk, etc.
If I get a SUP that allows my young kids to be on the board with me, I understand I need to get a SUP that will support us. How will this affect me if I am on the board alone?
Anyway, can someone recommend me a good deal on a SUP package for flatwater (lake)?
Lots of people talk about Naish but they have so many models.
I dont think I want an inflateable since I wont be transporting it and shouldnt have trouble storing it.
Cheers!
Hi Serpeant.
I have been a keen SUPer for a year now. I started on the Starboard Whopper, and now use a Fanatic Diamond mostly when I am out on the waves. The Whopper sounds like the board for your needs. 10' x 34" Super stable and large enough for the family and the dog, if you have one. It comes in different constructions, starting at around $14,990. You will never want to part with this board, it has great glide on flat water and performs really well on the waves as well. In short, Gold Standard, and for this reason difficult to find second hand. I suggest you contact your local SUP shop and ask to Demo this one. Good Luck and welcome to the World of SUPing!
A board like my new 11'2"x 32" Naish Quest would be perfect.. or something similar in other brands.
The 9'8"x 34" Quest would also be very good.. Where are you.. Can you demo boards?
if you have company ,you will need 190 litres and over .
both the whooper and the 11,2 Quest are perfect ,the 11,2 will
be better if you are to carry passengers .being longer ..
10 mana is a another good one .
get a good paddle.![]()
how heavy are you ..?
Cheers Guys!
I did find a Naish Odysseus 11'2" which I believe is the older Naish Quest.
It is about $300-$400 less than the Quest.
Which do I get?
I am about 85kg and the kids about 15kg.
I think the large all round boards being mentioned will work fine, but if you are flatwater paddling on lakes, something like the 2016/15 Naish Glide 14 x 30 would work very well for you. Very stable with a lot of float, and you would be much faster on flat water than on a oversized surfboard by yourself. I would also consider something like the Jimmy Lewis Searcher 12'6". I had an older Starboard 12'6" x 31.5" race model and would put two young kids on it with me and it worked quite well. Something like the 14 x 30 Glide and Jimmy Lewis Searcher would work even better.
Cheers Guys!

If you can afford it get the better looking new Quest and the deck pad is better..
Or save the 400 and buy a good paddle with it.. That's probably the best thing to do..

I have the 9'8 Odysseus. Love it but agree that it is a bit short with a kid on it-- the 11'2 may be better.
I'm all for saving money on your first board purchase-- as you progress, you may want something different.
I'd look at the Jimmy Lewis Maestro or Striker....Plenty of volume, stable & with full deck pads so great for the family but not compromising performance-
Maestro- 10'3 x 35" or 9'9 x 33"
Prioritising stability with massive width, Jimmy shaped the board to also glide and turn like a performance surfboard. It's perfect for beginner and intermediate wave riders and the width provides the perfect yoga platform. Full nose and squash tail for stability. Ample rocker, gentle V-Hull with swept centre fin and side bites for surf...
