My previous posts have involved my asking for advice on which Sup, or style of Sup, to buy next. The advice has been fantastic and [almost] overwhelming. I have basically decided on either a Sunova Speeed or Flow. I mentioned this to a fellow Sup'er today and he thought that the Speeed, with its squared-off nose, would be very hard to push out through broken waves. He hasn't ridden a Speeed but has been on another Sup with a similar nose. Given that I won't be out in anything much over waist or chest height [any bigger and I prone-surf on my mal] does anyone see this as a major problem? [I'm thinking of a 9'2" Speeed, which for a 73Kg old bloke might sound a bit big but I want to be catching waves on those not-again, small wave days.]
Speed "Punt" nose goes thru broken waves really easy i find, the nose is super thinned out so punches thru and the width is great for balance.
Look you cant go too wrong either way, both sik board shapes.
Id say if you are more longboard style, go with a speeed as i recon the feel of the turns are nice and drawn out like a long board. At 9'2 recon you could walk it a bit also, prob even get the toes over. The flow i think is more a shortboard fishy feel, throw the tail out, pump the wave for speed and a do it all board. at waist to chest may not get the most out of it tho.
I was tossing up between a 9's speeed or a 10' style as a larger second board for small fun days, paddling along the coast and cough cough the wifes board. I ended up going the style. only had a couple of paddles on it but wow such fun. After riding a small speeed found i was going away from the sup experience a little as mainly sat on it out back. Cant wait to get the big log into some fun rollers.
On bigger whitewater the nose of the Speeed can flick up sharply. you just need to adjust your stance before the wave hits the nose and it's fine.
On smaller waves I never noticed it...
speed nose shape definitely not an issue for going thru broken waves.......probabably almost a bonus as you have the stability of the width to stabilise your paddling efforts
Captain i really think you should paddle the 8.10.Its a wave catching machine. The 9.2 is also a great board but way more board to crank around on the smaller days.My concern is you would quickly adjust to the 9.2 and be looking to downsize at 73 kgs to something smaller, but i guess worst case you could sell the 9.2 as they seem to move pretty quickly or keep it and buy a shorter speed like i have done myself. If you check Hillys posts you will read he is a big power surfer plus 100kg on the 8.10 no worries.Whatever you decide will be darn good fun i can assure you of that.Good luck
Thanks everyone. Sounds like the Speeed 8'10 is the go. I'm looking forward to a purchase....just a few more dollars to save.
I'll post the results when I buy and have a few rides....watch this space.
