Hi guys..ive had read with interest the lengthy post on short sups. Very keen to get my hands on one now that the boys from Ocean Boards are sending some over to NZ. My question is:
Im 6ft and 94kgs..my go to board at the moment is a 8"10 fanatic prowave carbon 119L ..which i love..but im wanting something different to add to quiver and these boards look great.
The twoMinions im looking at are the 7"8 x 28 115L or the 7"10 x 29 124L ..my skill level is intermediate/advanced.
There wont be any demo sups available and at the price of $2600 i wana make sure i do my reaseach and get the best one for me. Im thinking of the 7'8 as its volume of 115L is close to that of my fanatic.

so..Is the volume of the Minion relate pretty much to the same voulme of other sups in terms of stability..will the 114L Minion be as stable or less satble then my prowave. What can riders of these type of sups offer me in adive as to which one i should get., or any feedback.

Supmaori,

I think that you really need to discuss this with Casso and Piros who know a thing or two about these boards.

My feeling is that you CANT translate your current experience and apply that to these boards. So whilst 119L on your current board may seem appropriate these sorts of figures dont really mean that much when you get onto a board like the Minion. I have not ridden the board yet and am waiting to do so when Casso has another demo day but I have followed the thread very very closely since its inception and what I am interpreting is that the shape and design of these boards lends itself to going much shorter dimensionally speaking and that volume gets pushed to the limit. These boards really are very very different to what we have been used to mate. Have a chat to Casso and Piros and I am sure they can guide you in the right direction.

I reckon you should go for the 7'8" x 28 @ 115L - it will probably provide about the same stability while standing out the back as your current 119L but it will blow your mind on a wave.

I'm 6'2" and 95kg. I have a 119L 8-8 x31 surf sup from Deep and a 119L 7-10 x29 minion. I find the minion is a little less stable side to side. Given the 8-10 pro wave is 29.25" wide, it seems that mags and casso are pointing you the right direction proportionately to what you are currently riding, based on my experience.

Supmaori,
Ive had the 7'8" x 28 1/4 @115 litres for 6 mths now. I'm 6'2" and 91kg.
Its the 'goto' board these days..........have ridden my 8'6" only twice in that time, it will now be there for when the minion has a ding.

I swapped onto an 8'10" Prowave recently in the water for a few waves.
- the Prowave was a little more stable but only marginal. I'm more comfortable standing on the minion because it's more nimble underfoot and easier to muscle around with the paddle.
- the comparison on the wave was much more different. The minion is far more positive when taking off....goes where you point it.
- to be honest the larger board felt quite stiff and clunky on the wave and I was very happy to get back on the minion.
- and there's the extra speed on the minion, very noticeable when you swap in the water.

Simon has really nailed the design on these boards, he's certainly the man to talk to further.

Good luck with your purchase

Guys stoked with the feedback from you all. Im really looking forward to getting my hands on one...and think the 7"8 will be the board i go for. My last question is what type of waves have you riden on your Minion and found them most suited to. Where I live we have a few options of a reef break..clean usually waist to chest hieght but more of a genlte wave, or a Beach break with is alot heavier and can get to head height plus.

Cheers and thanks again

6" to overhead.........but nothing super hollow and dredging yet.
First impression led me to think it would be limited to shoulder high because of the shorter turn arcs, but just wasn't used to the board. Now I haven't reached the limit for size yet......very positive through turns.
Again my first impression was that the board had too much speed, particularly after racing a heavy section, almost felt like had to wash off speed before putting onto a rail. But that feeling goes the more you surf it the more you get comfortable to surf it like a prone board.

Hey, where in NZ can you get the Minion? I know the SUP Centre in Auckland has a demo DEEP but not the Minion model at the moment. Reading the review has got me interested. I'd be keen to hear how you would get on with the 7'8 at your weight as I'm 85kg and currently on a 8'5 ProWave so might look at the Minion the next size down from the 7'8. Maybe the 7'2?... Is there a 7'6?

Also, are the Minion custom boards and where can I see online all the specs in the Minion range so know what would be the ideal model?

I've reading up on these boards and this style of shape and really digging the concept. I'm looking at going faster and getting snappier turns with more pivot. I thought the Youtube review of the Firewire Vanguard helped explain a lot about this style of shape as there is a lot going on and it makes sense.

What size below should I consider being 85kg, reasonably advanced skills and mid-40s? I'm currently riding Fanatic 8'5 ProWave @ 28 3/4" and 109L? I don't want to struggle the whole time on a board especially as I ride a variety of beach breaks that are either soft or grunty and glassy to choppy water states. Need to be able to handle it when conditions are choppy or windy or with current. At this stage the 8'5 ProWave is as small as I want to go to handle choppy water and with only a one board quiver.

7’2 x 27 1/4” x 4 1/8” volume 97 litres
7’4 x 27 ¾” x 4 1/4” volume 104 litres
7’8” x 28 ¼” x 4 3/8” volume 115 litres
7’10 x 29” x 4 ½” volume 124 litres

Is a 7'4 or 7'8 Minion the go-to board for most conditions?
Would it make sense to 'upsize' to a 7'10 @ 124L and have a Minion for choppy sessions and keep the ProWave for glassy waves?...

StevO, I think the 7'10 may be rather big for you. I ride a custom 7'10 at 119L and am nearly 10kgs heavier than you.

I was thinking of the 7'10 as the 'big' board in a quiver for choppy waves and keep the 8'5 ProWave for faster cleaner waves. But that might not make sense really as I find your latest boards becomes the go-to board and the other one just sits in the garage.

I reckon the 7'8 would be the safe bet to cover stability in choppy conditions but the 7'4 would be the ideal size but might need a bigger board as a back up for the choppy sessions?

Yeah - wax is horrible ****. Monster Spray is the way to go but might be a bit rough on the soft skin of ones inner thigh if you like to sit down on the board and blend in with the pronies.
